Took engine apart and guide looked brand new still, probably just needed adjusted, but better safe than sorry. Engine 98% back together now, with new cam chain, guide, valve seals, and gaskets from jugs up.

How much would you charge for some exhaust tips?

I'd stay away from old electrics. Pamco in my opinion is way to go, and for the price some stock exhausts go for, it'd be better to just buy a dyi kit. I think TC bros or Ardcore sells a DNA kit to easily use that springer.

I paid a lot less than that for two motors and carbs. I parted out one of the motors and got the other running without even touching it. $400 to me seems high.

Filter hooked up backwards? It's happened to many a men. Vapor locking can be checked for by trying to run it without gas cap on.
