    Make Offer - 1980 XS650 Hardtail Chopper

For a cross country ride? Probably not enough! Its a leather seat with about a half inch of padding, on 3 inch springs. So not a ton, but I guess thats up to the rider to decide. For me and my short trips it was fine.

Am I hearing piston slap? (vid)

Well i think i got it sorted. i read some more about other ways of adjusting the cam chain, and i guess i had it way too loose. I adjusted it with the engine not running. Decided to tighten it up quite a bit, until it was actually hard to turn, then backed it off. started the engine, and...

Am I hearing piston slap? (vid)

I can't remember if I put a new chain on there when I rebuilt it. Im leaning towards no. I think i isolated it a bit more today. Noticed that it makes the noise and you feel the bump specifically when the exhaust valve closes, but before the piston gets to TDC. It does it on each cylinder. I...

Am I hearing piston slap? (vid)

forgot to mention i did do that. But figured it could still be a valve because the rocker arms still do push the valves down even with the adjusters are all the way out. It didn't make the noise go away. what had the greatest effect was cam chain adjustment.

Am I hearing piston slap? (vid)

Hope this comes through on video. pulled the bike out of storage and did some maintenance to it today -adjusted cam chain -adjusted valves -retorqued head -changed oil/cleaned filters. Been hunting down the source of a ringing noise on my engine, which I thought was the Pamco knocking around...

mikes 750 kit - only kicks 4 out of 5 tries

thanks gary, moving the kicker pedal down a spline or two does help a bit. now its just every other kick where it just stops dead. still not happy. still confused as to why this would be happening

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

that clears it up. I suppose his comment was related to someone with an e advance. I have the mechanical advance.

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

Thanks again, 5twins. For sure its the bushings and not a piece of the camshaft. Might just order 2 of each and return if I dont need them. I've seen some posts through searching where PAMCO Pete says the bushings sliding around like that is no big deal. I don't see how that would be the case

Should I be looking into getting a compression release?

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

hey 5twins, found that thread a while ago and actually went ahead and got me a few shims from mcmaster today. Between .002 and .006 shims, i was able to get it where there wasn't any play and it still advanced when it was all tightened up. Very happy about that. About the bushings, its...

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

Not gonna bother with disassembly pics. Not much to really look at. Confirming that both the brass bushings are in and seated

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

Engine is an 82. I can check the bushings, maybe take a disassembly vid

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

Guessing yours doesn't jangle around like that? I've been told in the past to just live with it cause it is what it is. Frankly, i'm thinking of moving back to points unless this is remedied. As far as o rings or gaskets, pretty sure I got them all. Been a few years since I opened it up

    PAMCO Noise (vid)

Vid: Been thinking about this issue for a while now, ever since I've had the PAMCO installed years ago. Tried different advance rods as I heard theres a longer and shorter one through the years, ive tried both, still bangs around regardless of the rod. Tried shimming it and getting it to the...

mikes 750 kit - only kicks 4 out of 5 tries

Bumping this from the depths. Finally got time to look at this bike again. To answer a few of the questions: Taking out the spark plugs and the kick starter works just fine. Just putting one spark plug in gets it hanging up again. And I can't pull the clutch due to the fact I'm using a foot...

mikes 750 kit - only kicks 4 out of 5 tries

hey guys, weird one here... I've been riding this bike for about a year since doing the 750 kit. only put about 400 miles on it being that its my "when the planets align and the weather is good" rider, but since the 1st start its been only kicking one out of 5 tries. goes like this stuck...

1980 gas flowing out of carb mouth

I love how this silly question is garnering so much spitballing from the pros. Ya'll must be bored! Anyways, I found some oring replacements for the float assembly, pressed them in, and they're flush. Worth noting that the assemblies would fall out if the bowls/floats weren't on there and it...

1980 gas flowing out of carb mouth

Yep, they do. And i checked them and they were pretty hard, so i'm going to hope the hardware store has some replacements. Ideally that whole assembly that takes the oring shouldn't have any play if its all correct?
