I bet your clutch needs adjustment. I would bet that the kickstarter is going down without actually turning the engine, the clutch is slipping. I did this and thought the same thing last year. Let the clutch adjustment screw under the small cover in the left sideplate out and then kick to see...

It would be wise to run at least a fuse on your main lead coming off your positive terminal to your peripheral system (in this case just headlight and brakes). This way if you get a short the fuse burns out instead of your charging system or peripheral system or you start a fire. Maybe someone...
