May have found another neglected 650 in S.E.MI

Update 3/09: Owner returned from FL and called me. Seems like it was his first bike, and has been sitting more than 15 years. He said he parked it with a broken clutch cable and just lost interest in it. There is at least 15 years worth of dust and dirt on it, but seems complete and factory...

May have found another neglected 650 in S.E.MI

I know we all would like to get these bikes as cheap as possible, but how do you make an offer on a bike you know nothing about? From what I saw, paint & seat looked great, engine cases are oxidized, some pitting on the stock exhaust, still had factory grips, but covered in 15 to 20 years worth...

May have found another neglected 650 in S.E.MI

Looks like it will be a month or so before I find out about the bike. The owner is in Florida escaping this Michigan winter. I will be leaving my number with someone who will be in touch with him when he returns. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed till then.

May have found another neglected 650 in S.E.MI

Hope to have more info tomorrow. Was at a job and saw a filthy 1973 TX650 back in a garage, my favorite color scheme. 17,000+ miles, all factory stock except a tall 70's sissy bar. Not locked up and no plate on it. My first post on here was about the 1981 Special II that I bought out of a...

May have found another neglected 650 in S.E.MI

Gave a price on a job and went to check it out. Walked by the garage and spied a dirty but stock 1973 TX650 in that great blue color. Looks all stock except for the tall sissy bar. 17,000+ miles but filthy, not locked up. Owner wasn't around, will get more info on Friday.

Thanks for the link & tips! Only 2 pics I took are on the intro section, with my first post. Just came in for a break after driving my 2-stage, 5hp, Toro Snow Thrower. We got about 6 more on top of the 10"s we had.

Kroil OK to free up caliper?

I expect to rebuild the caliper in a couple months when it warms up, as in unheated garage, 0 to+10 degrees, 10"s of snow with another 6"-8"s coming tonight. Gary, If I need to move it again, I'll use the c-clamp. And I'll leave it dry till I have time to check everything. Thanks RG, "The...

Kroil OK to free up caliper?

I recently bought a '81 Special II that had been garaged for over 15 years. The front brake is dragging real bad, could hardly push it up the ramp into the truck. It will be a while before I have time and warm enough weather to work on it. Will soaking the caliper with Kroil bother anything if...

    New guy from S.E.MI w/1st SX650 1981 Special II

Bars & throttle tube ordered! I'll keep checking for headlight hardware. FB71, Those bars are called "Buckhorns" huh, as ugly as they are, I guess I couldn't get anything for them, even in great condition!

    New guy from S.E.MI w/1st SX650 1981 Special II

Thanks retiredgentleman, I'll check it out. I guess 10"s of snow, is not much in your part of the world! Looks like your bars are out of stock. I think the #25-0652 will be fine.

    New guy from S.E.MI w/1st SX650 1981 Special II

Thanks for the welcomes I have received. Restore minus the cruiser bars will definitely be the first stage. Looking to replace the bars with the early stock style that my '73 TX750 had. Would that be Mikes xs1/xs2 replacement bar? 30.5" wide seems about right to me. What is the 1981 throttle...

    New guy from S.E.MI w/1st SX650 1981 Special II

Joined the forum because this is the most information on XS650's I have found. Great place! I used to ride a TX750 back in the 70's, guess that is a hint to my age. Recently bought a project bike to do with my sons 21 & 23 yrs old. Chrome & wheels are good, few scratches in tank & side...
