Well I finally finished bringing the '72 XS650 back to life. Its been a long slow journey but I rode it today and she did wonderful. All original except for badges... I left the gas tank with its "character" in tact for now since it is all original.
Thanks to all of you that helped answer...
I have a '72 xs650 which I am trying to bring back to life without a major engine teardown. I am almost done but have a couple of questions regarding the engine.
I did a compression test and have 145 on one side and 115 on the other. From my experience 10% difference is ok so I know thats out...
I know this doesnt answer your question but I saw your thread on the rebuild of your master cylinder question but never did read which rebuild kit you ended up using. I just ordered mikes rebuild kit for my '72.
I have a '72 that I am getting close to finishing up and have a question regarding the front wheel. I have read some of the other threads explaining torque values (mostly on the rear wheel) but on the front tire there are two nuts, one larger pressing against the square washer and then the...
So the boiling water did the trick. Man it came off in pieces but it came out. Used a small pick to clean the debris and grooves so thanks again to all the ideas. 5twins, yes I think I am going to make the tool because I am not going to press my luck since I have it basically all apart now!
Thanks for the help everyone. I am boiling water as we speak. These seals are just making fun of all my attempts. They are seriously stuck. I know I've read what a pain these are but didn't think they would be this bad. I guess after sitting for 15+ years they became one with the fork...
First of all, thanks to this forum I have been able to search and get most all of my questions answered to help me get the '72 XS650 I am trying to bring back to life with only having to post a coupla questions.
I have searched and read the fork seal removal threads but my fork seal seems to...
Hey everyone! So far I have had great luck reading and searching the forum for info on the '72 XS650 restoration I am doing but I am now stuck with another question.
I want to keep the original headlight bucket. It appears my only recourse is to replace the sealed assembly with THIS assembly...
Thanks Paul. I have 10 bolts out but I will double check. I was wondering about the dowels so thanks for that bit of info. Think I will take the big sledge to it and see if it will budge. (just kidding of course). I will try the slim blade and some gentle persuasion and see what happens!
Hey everyone. I am working on getting the right side cover off of my '72 and its not happening. I am getting the service manual but in the mean time I am looking for tips on getting a stubborn cover off. Got the oil filter out. Am I missing something? I don't want to mess up without the proper...
Thanks so much. Shaggy yours appears to be the same color as mine but in much better shape! I look forward to finding out more about these bikes and everyone on the forum. Hopefully I can contribute as well someday.
Hey Everyone. Noob here with a '72 XS650 completely original. I am going to get this thing back on the road. It happens to be a friend of mines and was last ridden in 97-98. I am sure I will have a ton of questions as I get into this bike.
I don't know very much about these bikes but have...
