Make Offer - XS650 standard - Portland ME

Thanks for the input. I agree, a title might make sense even if it stays in Maine, just to check that box. I'll get some more pictures up later tonight. I think deep down both the title and pictures are just another step to actually parting with the bike. It's a process...

Make Offer - XS650 standard - Portland ME

I bought it without the title and Maine doesn't require one for registration or insurance. I believe Maine actually has a fairly simple process for a lost title replacement but since I've never needed it I've never gone through with the full process. I bought the bike from an older gentleman in...

Make Offer - XS650 standard - Portland ME

Well, I'm in the process of maybe listing my bike for sale...I've got a toddler and another on the way so my riding time/responsibilities have changed over the past few years. I've gotten a ton of help from this forum over the years so I wanted to see if anyone is in the market here before fully...

chain rubbing on inner side of rear shock

Thanks again - you make it much easier to own an xs650, appreciate it.

chain rubbing on inner side of rear shock

Interesting, hadn't thought of that (or noticed). Do you think it'd be better to flip both shocks around so they're set up similarly? Only looks like it'd kick the shock out a degree or two at best so maybe not enough to make a difference.

chain rubbing on inner side of rear shock

Hi Guys, have a minor issue and was hoping for some advice and potential solutions. My 78 standard is mostly stock, but it came with some rear shocks that are obviously not stock. The bike came with a chain guard that was in pretty rough shape (corrosion/pitting/rust), and it looks like the...

Throttle Shaft Seals - last ditch effort or ditch 'em?

The shafts feel pretty sturdy to me without any extra play. Its very possible I just don't have it tuned right from an air mixture standpoint. I don't get any popping on decal or misfires when driving, so the problem really seems to be isolated to idling only. This is all with a big caveat that...

Throttle Shaft Seals - last ditch effort or ditch 'em?

1978 Standard, stock BS38 carbs, stock air filters. Looking for some input to see if there's anything else I'm missing before either living with my carbs with a higher than prescribed idle or trying again with another set of carbs. I've fully rebuilt my carbs twice; blown out ever port and...

effcts of exhaust leak between header and muffler

I've got a 78 standard with after market (unknown, came with the bike) mufflers. I've been doing a bit of work recently and today did work in shorts and noticed some air puffing out from between the muffler and header pipes. I've found plenty of threads that explain using the exhaust spacers to...

Wanted - front orange reflector wanted - 1 or pair

Ugh - was doing a head gasket re-torque and was careless and broke the plastic reflector that screws in to the front neck under the headlight/in front of the tank. The one on my bike has the black plastic housing opposed to the chrome, so I'm looking for one of those or a set if they have to go...

    Minor front disc brake drag

Thanks RG, that's what I was hoping to hear. On a side note, pumping my forks got some of the nastiest black sludge I've ever seen to squirt about 5 feet across my shop. Wasn't getting much then I tried covering the fork top to create some suction and bam, sludge.

    Minor front disc brake drag

Just checking since I don't know and couldn't find an answer. My 78 standard has the stock caliper (fully rebuilt last year with a new piston and seals), new pads, a modern tw250 master (11mm I believe) cylinder and s/s one peice brake line. Brake works great. I recently got a jack so I was able...

    When a shop screws up

update for everyone. I brought the wheel/tire back into the shop and they agreed to take it back and re-set the bead for me. Upon picking it up the counter person said the mechanic had to completely remove the tire again and clean away some corrosion on the inside of the wheel that was keeping...

    When a shop screws up

Thanks for the various replies. I'm going to take the wheel off the bike again and bring it into the shop, mostly so it can be rebalanced once it is deflated, reset, and inflated. There is always going to be some info lost in translation on the Internet. The bounce in the ride isn't terrible...

    When a shop screws up

Thanks Gary, I don't disagree at all. I have not done the bearing yet, but I don't recall any similar bounciness before the new tire was put on. Before noticing the bead unevenness I did check the forum to see about causation of a bouncy ride and the most common topic was an uneven bead on the...

    When a shop screws up

Bounciness was more speed driven... Over 45mph. Chain and sprocket have less than 200 miles on them, chain was carefully set to spec /distance between swing arm zerks and axel were measured prior to riding. I took a video of the wheel spinning and its pretty easy to see the pinched spot each...

    When a shop screws up

So just as a quick follow up, the tire has two lines near the bead set, one line that is just under the rim lip, and one that is exposed that I used to check equidistant marking. Most of the way around it'd between 5.6 and 5.75 mm, but where it looks pinched drops to about 3.5mm. Not a lot from...

    When a shop screws up

Think that can be done with the tire on the bike? I'm not opposed to trying, but I'd also hate to pinch the tube or something and lose my direct link to the shop being the ones screwing it up. Really not looking forward to removing the exhaust, chain, axel, etc again.
