To whomever posted about back-bleeding brakes

Just for clarity, the port is closed while the brake is applied. Any air bubbles are compressed into smaller bubbles. With luck the small bubbles migrate upward to the MC, consolidate there and are released into the reservoir when the brake is released.

stripped a valve cover stud in head

Exactly what happened to the first one I did and how I resolved it. You do have to keep track of that particular cover and where it goes the next time you have it off. mike

stripped a valve cover stud in head

The 1980 Special I bought had three stripped out. I used a Helicoil on all three with good success. In addition to the good advice above two points: 1. Take your time and make sure your drill is perpendicular. 2. Just grind a bit of the tip off the standard Helicoil tap and presto you have a...

    changing sprockets

I just switched to 17/33 but I am waiting for the new chain to arrive so I can try it.

    changing sprockets

For posterity... I was reading through this thread and noticed that several fellow Canadians mentioned having 36 tooth rear sprockets on their Specials and one Canadian mentioned that 34 was standard. My Canadian 1980 XS650SG owner's manual states that the XS650G and XS650SG has a 36/17 ratio...

Newby seeks intermittent engine hesitation diagnostic advice

After removing the TCI from the bike and having a look at the board I decided that I wasn't going to mess around trying to replace diodes or whatever on a 35 year old circuit board and I installed a PAMCO e-advancer. Bike starts on the first kick and runs great. Mike

    E-Advancer survey

Well I am too late for the poll but I wanted to leave comments anyway. I just installed an e-advancer on my 1980 Special. The TCI had been acting up and I just decided to do away with it rather than to mess around trying to replace diodes etc. on a 35 year old circuit board. The...

    Rear tire width/removal

1980 SG I went to remove the rear wheel the other day for the first time in order to access the TCI. To my surprise the rear wheel would not come off unless I unattached the rear brake caliper from its mount. The tire would not clear through the gap no matter what angle I tried. This...

    E-Advancer survey

I just ordered one to replace my TCI so this is encouraging. mike

    TCI Access

Thanks for all that. Yes, I have done all the resistance checks and all is fine. It is purely TCI triggering related as the bike runs fine with the alternator disabled (no magnetic field from the rotor). Mike

    TCI Access

Thank you for the confirmation. Mike

    TCI Access

The bike is a stock 1980 Special. The bike had some running issues. Runs fine with the R/R unplugged. Tried the rare earth magnet install and it ran fine for almost 200 kms before the same running issue returned. Again runs fine with the R/R unplugged. There is a post where someone else...

Newby seeks intermittent engine hesitation diagnostic advice

Well I put several hundred kilometers on during which the bike was running very well and suddenly the bike started running poorly again with exactly the same symptoms. First check was to see if the small magnet was still in place and it was. Then I disconnected the R/R and the bike ran fine...

Newby seeks intermittent engine hesitation diagnostic advice

Always a good idea to close out a thread one has started..... So through the winter I went through the bike but didn't find anything that I thought would account for the problem. As the result of Pamcopete's post I also read up on the TCI-related problems and in particular the problem of the...

Rates for mike insurance in Ont,Canada?

As I discovered most insurance companies will not insure a bike over 30 years old in Ontario. As a consequence I ended up having all my insurance (home, 2 autos, 3 bikes) with one firm and my 1980 XS with Wawanesa who charge $494 (perfect record, almost forty years riding). This would drop to...

Newby seeks intermittent engine hesitation diagnostic advice

Were the OEM fuel lines of the black rubber variety? I notice that the lines are of the clear plastic type. I suspect that someone has been through these carbs before. I now see some threads describing intermittent TCI problems and the associated tests. Thanks for that. mike

Newby seeks intermittent engine hesitation diagnostic advice

I believe the previous owner started it regularly but didn't ride it any distance as he didn't have a legit plate on it. I did add an in-line filter as is my practice on any engine without one. Doing a tear-down and carb cleaning is where I was headed - thought I would seek other thoughts...
