I havent done it but asked the same question as I too wanted to do a 5th gear OD in my 76. http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20318 It seems if you can find a cheap gearset it may be worth a shot! Let us know what you figure out!

I just had my title transferred into my name. It was titled to the original owner back in 1976. Thought the VA DMV would have a field day with me because all the original owner did was sign his name and it was clear that the signature occurred many years ago as the bike has changed hands a few...
