    White smoke

Update I did some searching and reading. My oil level was a little too high ...drained some but with no effect. However, when I went to retorque the head nuts, I found them very loose. I torqued them back to the slightly higher spec, given elsewhere on this forum, and saw an immediate...

    White smoke

1980 XS650G. Pretty much standard. While running down a long hill, with plenty of twisties, my girl and my mate (behind me on their bikes) alerted me to the huge amount of white smoke I suddenly started generating. Back home, the smoke seemed to be mainly on one side. I did a compression check...

Bs34 stuck mixture screws - thread size

*update I obtained a lead and bottom tap for m6 x 0.5 , which is right size. Using the good side and its mixture screw to figure out the depth to drill to, I rigged up the carb on the pillar drill to get it all central. Having the tunnel proved useful to ensure everything was perpendicular...

Bs34 stuck mixture screws - thread size

Thanks.:) I ordered mixture screws (here by the weekend) and m6 x 0.5 taps (here by Weds). I may attempt this at the weekend (cold and family dependant)

Bs34 stuck mixture screws - thread size

Not the case over here. Neither cheap nor plentiful. I guess I may yet end up trawling u.s. Ebay for a rh carb unless you'd entertain shipping abroad .. .? I have had success doing this, but those carbs had the air screw flush and not stuffed down a "tunnel", like they are on this XS. Is it...

Bs34 stuck mixture screws - thread size

Basically the previous owner(s) had completely buggered the head on one of the mixture screws on my 1980 bs34 carbs. I tried a few of the usual methods, lh drill an ultimately driving a small screwdriver into the chewed up remains. Nada. Does anyone know the thread size of the mixture...

Heiden tuning coil kills my sparks

Went to fit a coil from Heiden tuning today. Bike has been missing and the coil ( and moulded in wires) looked original. I wired as per the instructions .... And no sparks .... I only worked the kickstart a few times to check..... I put the old coil back on and have no sparks from that now...

Free - standard exhaust - usable downpipes, clamps and silencer brackets

You could do worse than emailing Ian (at MOTAD) as per the link: http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33802 and ask him when they'll be available and for how much ? As I said, they are very, very similar to the OEM system ... I have more pics ....

Free - standard exhaust - usable downpipes, clamps and silencer brackets

38mm o/d downpipes very similar to my OEM system (apart from no balance pipe) Not sure what MOTAD will retail these at or when they will be available.

Free - standard exhaust - usable downpipes, clamps and silencer brackets

Having just fitted an fantastic new MOTAD stainless system ( I did the fit check for them) http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33802 I have the OEM system left here The silencers are pretty much toast, the balance pipe got cut off and welded over BUT the original silencer brackets...

Charging - Low rotor resistance but charging

Ok. So I am hearing that low resistance is indicative of failing wiring and it's just going to get worse....I guess the hunt is on for another standard rotor. The Permanent Magnet thing, for later bikes, requires a new ignition system to go with it. That's not trivial pennies ....

Charging - Low rotor resistance but charging

My problem only came to light when the charging stopped one evening. Once I jumped the green wire, then it's worked since. I did add a direct earth from the reg black wire.. I ain't got no problem riding it about and waiting for failure BUT .. if the charging goes, 30 miles from home on a dark...

Charging - Low rotor resistance but charging

My rotor has about 3ohm between the rings (should be around 5.3). I have been experiencing a few of , what I thought were, regulator issues (as jumping the green wire solved them) and a new electrosport regulator doesn't work at all. Funny thing is that the rotor passes the slap test and puts...

    Two duff regulators ?

The brushes are about 12mm. The battery is new. Given it's just one block connector for the regulator. If I put my old regulator back on - then I see exactly the right level of charging, with lights on and lights off. If I put the Electrosport one on, immediately, then nada. As I said, I have...

    Two duff regulators ?

1980 special. CDI. All standard. Been charging fine, but lost all output coming home from pub (voltmeter fitted) Ran the tests here.. Rotor has magnetism, output on the alternator wires. Jumped the green wire and voltage was seen ... Ok. It's the regulator/rectifier. After all this the...

Why would I lose ONE big end

There didn't appear to be any blockages, I ran an air line through it all. The bearings seemed fine - on both sides - good enough to go back in certainly. I am very familiar with the state of old british bikes, left standing for years and the condensation eating into the races etc.... none of...

    cam chain front guide

why would the front chain guide shred like that ? Was it lined up ?

Why would I lose ONE big end

The big end is likely an anomaly, esp with no history on the bike. Like I said originally, I did wonder about the starting/revving/idling on the side stand for years and years. It looks like the oil would pool over the other side of the engine leaving only spray lubrication.. The failure of the...

Why would I lose ONE big end

I stripped the engine completely. Every bolt/nut cam off without stripping or problems Every oil seal was soft and pliable The bores were on standard Yam pistons unworn and the rings likewise The valves hardly needed a regrind The clutch plates were virtually unworn too. The front camchain...

Why would I lose ONE big end

new 1980 bike; bought with noisy engine. I stripped it to replace the front cam chain guide, after finding the top strainer full of bits. The sump filter was breached. On getting down to the crank, I found the right hand (as in clutch side) big end bearing shot. I mean really shot; like 3/4mm...
