A few vintages ago I bought this bike from a guy in Montana. I lived in Seattle at the time and his sister lived nearby and was getting married soon so he brought it to me.
"Ran when I parked it." So I parked it in my garage for awhile. Finally, I flushed the tank, cleaned the carbs, put new...
I got a coil mounting bracket from Mike's.
to mount a coil like this
The coil mounting arms fit the coil perfectly. I thought the other side of the bracket would fit in the original coil mounting holes but they are not far enough apart. There is no note on Mike's product page about where...
78 Standard
My original outer oil pump rotor is cracked. The inner looks fine. There is a small amount of scoring on the inside of the surfaces where the rotors sit. You can see the scoring but you can't feel it, if that makes any sense.
I bought a new rotor and assembled it all and installed...
There seem to be two common clutch basket holding tools.
This one:
or this one:
And if the second style, which one? Amazon has at least a dozen different ones. Which number for our beloved XS650s?
Thanks.
Phil from Seattle here,
I haven't been around for a bit but I still love my XS650s. I have 3 of them now.
I picked up a 79 Special awhile back. Finally got its turn and it is a runner. There were no air cleaners when I got it and the wiring was really hacked up. Lots of masking tape and black...
I have been working on my '78 Standard for a couple of months now. I have it apart as far as I'm going to go and I thought you could follow along as I get it put back together.
This refurbishment is a classic case of Project Creep. When I started, I only wanted to do one thing. By the time I...
When I took apart my wheels there were these little washers. I didn't get new ones so I assume I should re-use these. Correct?
They have been de-greased and soaked in the de-ruster but still look a little rough. Should I give them a ride in my tumbler to make them smooth?
BTW, the thread on...
I have looked through the Tech sections and I don't see a reference to this. I have the frame stripped with only the engine left to remove. Carbs are off, top mount removed. I would like to lay it down, disconnect the mounts and then pick up the frame minus the engine.
Some questions:
1. Left...
I went to The One Motorcycle Show in Portland last weekend.

I created an album here for the pictures. Enjoy!

1978 Special, 12K miles
Rear caliper rebuilt, bronze swingarm bushings installed, all greased and lubed. Rear wheel bearings good and the chain is aligned with proper slack.
When I apply the rear brake alone it feels like the rear of the bike is pulling to the right. If I apply both front...
Pulled the carbs hoping for the best. I did drain them before I put it back under its cover oh so many years ago. The verdict: Not horrible. Would have been better if I had pulled them and blown them out, but so it goes.

The right one:
One nice thing is they are so...
Newly arrived 79 Special with 20K miles. It has not been treated well.
Compression left is 102, right is 65. Ouch.
My next step is to check the valves.
After that?
Thanks.
I still haven't got all the leaks in my 78 Standard plugged. No drips on the white paper towel that was underneath it all night after our 80 mile loop yesterday.
Is this likely the starter seal? Big drop of fresh oil on the left of the two starter mounting bolts.
The left side...
If you are in the Puget Sound area:
A week from today.
On the second Wednesday of the month during the warmer months, Seattle Used Bikes has a BBQ for all comers. Think Backfire Moto on a much smaller and friendlier scale. There is always an amazing collection of bikes; new and old, fancy...
My 78 Standard has been over a couple of times and the left side rider footpeg rubber is quite chewed up. Apart from cutting it apart, how do you remove and replace this part?
Thanks.
On the third Wednesday of the month between March and October there is a gathering of two-wheel folks and their machines. 49th NW and 17th NW, just west of 15th in Ballard if you find yourself in the area. A little slice of the Seattle moto scene.
Here are three of our favorite ride that were...
