    For Sale - 1980 XS650 Frame

I have a 1980 XS650 frame that is left over from my build several years ago. The frame was pretty clean, but I used the donor bike to build on a Paughco frame. This one has an IL junk title. I'm not looking to get much out of it, but I'm moving and I have no reason to keep it. If you're near...

For Sale - XS650 Frame, Forks, and Trees $150

I have a frame from my donor bike, a 1980. Frame is in good shape and includes an IL Junk Title. You can use this title to build a bike and run through the IL Specially Constructed Vehicle program. I did the same program, but with a brand new Paughco frame. I also have a set of 34mm front...

    R4YL 4.0

Anyone heading out to Run 4 Your Life this year? It's a helluva good time with a bunch of great guys and great bikes. I won't be able to take the XS this year as the DMV still hasn't processed my title/plate application, so I'll be on the Stratoliner instead. All bikes are welcome...

    Base and Head gasket

OK, so I probably made a mistake some months back. I was getting the engine ready and thought I probably better inspect the front cam chain guide. I pulled the cam cover and visually inspected the guide. It looked good, so I left it in place. Put the cam cover back on and re-torqued the head...

    Fork rebuild, now feels rough

I rebuilt my forks, cleaned the crap out of them, put in Progressive springs, used new All Balls seals, and 175cc of ATF fluid in each fork. Now, when I hold the front brake and bounce the forks up and down, it feels like the springs are scraping against the sides of the fork tubes. Is this...

    Wanted - Alternator Rotor Puller

Figured I'd ask before buying one from Mikes. Anyone have a rotor puller they'd like to part with? I've got a PMA kit from Hugh on the way. One of those tools I'll likely only need once. Thanks! http://www.mikesxs.net/product/35-0040.html Kent

    Tubeless Cast Wheel

I probably risk a flame war here, but can anyone show me where it says "Tubeless" on their cast wheels? My donor bike was a 1980 with cast wheels and rear disc. I don't see "Tubeless" on there anywhere. I bought some tubeless tires thinking that all the cast wheels from 1979 on were tubeless...

    Front Cam Guide

OK, in the middle of tear down and I'm finding some fine aluminum and black plastic in the side oil filter. I'm assuming this is most likely the front cam chain guide. So, where does one go to buy them? I'm not seeing them on MikesXS, they're out of stock at 650Central. Are you guys just...

    Brake Pivot and Linkage

Can anyone tell me if the stock brake pivot and driven linkage on a 1980 with disc rear would be stainless? They are magnetic, but I know that's not a final test. I also don't see any sign of corrosion or rust on these parts. If they are stainless, I'd just polish them instead. Thanks! Kent

    VM34 Tuning Help

OK, so I fought with the BS34's and decided to give the VM34's a chance. Bought a set from Michael Morse of 650Central.com. I put the carbs on last night and it would start but ran like total crap. Went in for the night and read the Mikuni Guide, the Sudco book, and the guide here from Panic...

    Stainless Head Bolts

Are there any stainless (or preferable stainless with an hex head) replacements for these: Most everything else on the engine I can get in stainless locally, but these are a bit of an odd duck. Thanks! Kent

    VM34 Pics Needed

Does anyone have any good close up pics of their VM34's mounted? I just ordered a pair from MMM (and a Sudco Mikuni manual on the way as well), but I have some interesting fuel plumbing plans and I'd like to see specifically how and where the fuel is fed in. Thanks! Kent

    Bead blasted engine photos?

Has anyone bead blasted their engine and left it with that "rough" surface? If so, do you have any good pics of it assembled? I like the looks of some of the powder coated engines, but I'm still considering big bore and re-phase next year, so I'd rather hold off on making the engine too pretty...

Photoshop help and color suggestions needed

I'm a techie by trade, but I'm no artist, and I'm certainly not proficient in Photoshop. Anyone here willing to try some color options on my build? I'm hoping to get this thing off to powder soon, but I'm unsure of the color scheme. My wife and I have discussed a few options. Since this is...

    Drilling rotors

I finally got around to drilling my rear rotor. I drilled the front one about 5 days before my son was born, so things have been on the back burner. For the rear rotor, I used a progressive drill patter. The holes get smaller as you move from the inside edge to the outside edge of the rotor...

Wanted - Top Tree Clamp 35mm Shaved

Looking for a 35mm top clamp that has had the speedometer and ignition switch tabs shaved off and perhaps a bit of other smoothing as well. Does not need to be a perfect polish as they will likely be powder coated. Shipping to 60447 IL. Thanks! Kent

Drop Kick BS34's - What next?

So I'm just about ready to drop kick these BS34's. Well, at least one of them. I've got one running great, but the other one acts like it's doing nothing at idle, and doesn't seem to kick in until the main jet circuit. I've blasted every orifice I can see with carb cleaner and it's still...

    Clutch rebuild. Other Maint too?

I've adjusted my clutch but finding Neutral has been a pain :cussing:, and today trying to shift back and forth even from First to Second was near impossible. I'm thinking I'll just rebuild the whole clutch. Might be as simple as the needle bearing, but in a 30 year old bike with ~20,000 miles...

    Needle Pics

No real question here, but thought I'd post some pics for reference in case it helps anyone else. These are for my 1980 BS34 carbs. Top to bottom: Canadian Jet Needle 5IX11 - MikesXS P/N 48-0663 Stock US Jet Needle 5HX12 - MikesXS P/N 48-0661 Heiden Tuning Needle from MikesXS P/N 48-0667...
