Interesting XS650s at BackfireMoto in Seattle

Yes, early *Tonti framed bikes have a lower steering head making a nice low line. Later bikes (mid-80s) lose that with a taller steering head. *850T, 850 T-3, LeMans I & II, SP1000, G5 and pre 1985. Avoid the iConvert as it's an odd bird. That bike is a '77 T-3.

Interesting XS650s at BackfireMoto in Seattle

Jeez dood, you ride a Wee as well. I really need to buy you a beer. I love my B1250 but every time I sit on a 650 'Strom I wonder if I pulled the right trigger. I've tested one twice and came away with "if a puppy's soul could inhabit a motorcycle it would live here". :bike:

Interesting XS650s at BackfireMoto in Seattle

I'm pretty hep to the old bikes, anything after 1990 kinda loses me. I've owned an '87 SPII, '84 LeMans III, V65 Lario, V65sp, hotrod T-3 and a Quota. Pre-kids the wife and I would ride to wherever the Guzzi National Rally was every other summer. Oregon, Kansas and Arkansas with her on one of...

Interesting XS650s at BackfireMoto in Seattle

I am first and foremost a Guzzi guy. A '77 T-3 on the shelf awaiting time/energy/money. The XS may get flipped to fund the project if a buyer presents himself.

    Wanted - 1978 XS650E Tank Badge

It'd look great on my bike then. Assuming you're selling.

    Wanted - 1978 XS650E Tank Badge

My project needs a right side tank badge, preferably ratty to match the rest of the bike. Like this...pic from an old ad, it saves me some effort. Thanks Matt in Everett, WA

    Rear Drum Arm Directional?

I've exhausted my quota of stoopit questions so I had to figure out this one by myself. Replaced rear wheel bearings (and swingarm bushings), while I was in there I disassembled the brake hub to lube the pivot shaft and cam. Upon reassembly the axle slipped through the bearings easily but...

pivot shaft removal from swing arm

I guess it is an air chisel, from a cheap air tool set I bought years ago for the rattle gun. The die is an aluminum drift attached to a riveter base acquired from the aviation Industry.

    All Balls Rear Kit Fail

I didn't go that far. All back together now, swingarm bushings replaced (another PITA) and tomorrow I'll hit it again. I *think* I'm done spending money on it for now. Hopefully get to put some miles on it in it's full ugly glory. Stop into a few bike nights and flash the rust. And thanks...

pivot shaft removal from swing arm

Just freed a stubborn swingarm bolt myself. This setup has been invaluable for the XS project. A cheap air hammer drove the impossible swingarm bolt like butta. It also freed the rusted crossover that I'd fought with for hours. Tools are awesome.

    All Balls Rear Kit Fail

Got my answer, not for the "E". Amazons application list is off. Still would like to know the bearing # if anybody could help a fella out.

    All Balls Rear Kit Fail

Sorry if this is an old issue but the search function here doesn't work well for me. I bought the All Balls 25-1357 rear wheel bearing kit and the ID of the big bearing is too big, small side ID is fine and both ODs are good. Is a '78 E different from a Special? Fitment list says they're...

Tire question (what sizes are you using for 18/19 combo)

I just spooned on a set of Shinko 712s, easy to install. Zero miles so I can't comment on handling. 100/90-19 front 110/90-18 rear.

    Exhaust Rusted Tight

The pipe by the crossover clamp is kinda mushroomed from prying on it but otherwise we're good. Some hammer work should straighten things out. Oh yea...now I get to order some brass swingarm bushings.

    Exhaust Rusted Tight

I WON!!! Mr. Goldberg to the rescue. The final solution, after a can of PB Blaster and a bunch of propane was wedging a couple of boards between the frame and pipes with a strap to tension. Lots of heat and some rapid vibrations with an air hammer tipped with an aluminum die *similar to...

    Exhaust Rusted Tight

I had my angle grinder in my hand today but thought better of it. Next step (if there's no magic bullet from the forum) is to cut the crossover and weld a sleeve over the cut so it looks normal unless you pay attention. Thanks Angus.
