    Building... something.

In other updates, I've replaced the KX motocross forks with KLX supermoto forks. A little shorter and much better tuned for the street. Also replaced the skinny 21 up front with a wider 19. Handling on the street is way better and in the dirt too, except for maybe being a little less stable...

    Building... something.

After agonizing for literally years about side covers I'm final going with some from an XS400 with the emblems swapped. They fit the frame and look stock but work with the pod filters and monoshock.

    Building... something.

Been going through a lot of rear tires with the 19x1.85 motocross rim since all I can find in a 50/50 is a front turned round. Just laced up an 18x2.15 to give me more choices, even though I liked the handling and tracker-ish look of the 19. Went from a 100/90-19 to a 120/90-18. Not a huge...

I did some preliminary poking around at the time, more or less the same as shortening modern cartridge forks in a right-side-up setup. Shorten a spacer on one side and fabricate one the same size (assuming you want the same amount of pre-load) on the other. Edit: found this in my bookmarks.

If I remember correctly, it's around 3 inches longer.

I kept the long forks because I liked the way it handles, even though I wasn't crazy about the looks at first. The forward offset of the front axle lowers the trail so you don't notice the rake. Honestly, I couldn't be more pleased with the handling. I think it handles at least as well as your...

    Building... something.

Front brake works surprisingly well, and I've hauled it down from interstate speeds at maxim braking on several occasions. I wasn't sure how it was going to work at first but after the first couple of "panic" stops i started riding it like any other bike. The 21" wheel keeps the rotor speed...

A fairly recent, if not great quality pic. Still my daily ride.

    Building... something.

3/4" square tube salvaged from the old KX rear subframe is sturdy enough to mount the fender nice and close. This particular fender is just one I had lying about and is actually radiused for a 19, but it'll do for now.

    Electronic speedo ?

I'm looking at the Trail Tech Vapor as well. It's just over a hundred bucks but is packed full of features and ships with a mounting kit specific to my forks so no drilling, rigging, crazy glue, or JB weld necessary. http://www.trailtech.net/digital-gauges/vapor

Changed to lower bars and big squishy grips. Still tinkering with side covers and fender mounts. Riding it every day and quite enjoying the nice power-to-weight ratio and great handling.

    What would you pay?

Conceivably, the bluing on the pipes could be due to the low miles. A few intermittent, short rides with months or even years in between would leave condensation and corrosive exhaust byproducts to sit in the inner pipes. 35 years of this may have corroded the inner pipes. Just a thought. (You'd...

Going kick only: small LiFePO4 vs. pma+ battery eliminator...

Thanks everyone for the input. A 240 cca LiFePO4 still seems resonably small, especially since it can be mounted at any angle and is very light. I have several options for side covers that hide everything and still keep things more open and clean looking and not crowd the monoshock. I've...

What have you done to your XS today?

No correlation between the squoze wires and the self-destruction. Later Sportster tanks have a little extra room to the left of the tunnel, slid the new wires through next to my existing (homemade) harness. Switch actually fell apart physically. Although it does get worse. Finally rounded up a...

What have you done to your XS today?

Decided I wanted turn signals. Managed to find a place to stash the flasher and to squeeze three more wires through. Added a trailer module so my two rear bullet lights would function as stop/turn/tail lights. Had turn signals for approximately 15 seconds before the cheap Chinese switch...

Going kick only: small LiFePO4 vs. pma+ battery eliminator...

I'm probably going with this... http://www.batterytender.com/Batteries/240-CCA-Lithium-Engine-Start-Battery.html I can get it from Amazon for less than a hundred bucks with free shipping. Gonna take the measurements and build a cardboard mock up when I start shuffling things around under the...

    Building... something.

Front fender is in the works for sure. I always run fenders as I ride year round rain or shine. Besides, I live on a dirt road, and there are small rocks about the size of the voids on the tires. You get the picture. Working on some mounts for the inverted fork lowers that will let me use a...

Going kick only: small LiFePO4 vs. pma+ battery eliminator...

I thought I'd read that one, but somehow missed your post where you did all the math, which is exactly what I'd hoped to find! I'm a huge fan of LiFePO4 batteries after putting a Shorai in my Vulcan several years ago. Weighed nothing, came in the mail fully charged, and could sit for months at...
