    For Sale - 1975 XS650 Street Tracker project - Vancouver, B.C.

Sorry if I wasn't more clear. It's a package deal only at this point. I've edited the original post for clarification.

    For Sale - 1975 XS650 Street Tracker project - Vancouver, B.C.

I have an uncompleted street tracker project bike. I bought the bike running with registration. I purchased most of the conversion parts from Omar's and XS650 Direct. Total invested is $4,650 Cdn ( about $3,200 U.S.) for which I have most receipts. All of the original parts are also here. The ST...

Luck ? No. But I did try some welding :) As expected, not having done any sort of welding for 40 years really took its toll on what little skill that I started with. Thank goodness for angle grinders. The parts will stay together; for a while anyway. Part of my problem was that the setting on...

    Frame stand - home made

I've seen engine stands, but I hadn't seen any frame stands around here; or just about anywhere else for that matter. I wanted to get my frame up off the floor to a reasonable working height. I also wanted it to be stable and not wobble around because of the location of the side stand mount...

    DYI Powder Coat Question?

I used a toaster oven for a little test I did and it was fine but only got to 350F so you may want to get a thermometer to put inside and test how high it actually gets. Harbor Freight sells a PC oven for about $400 and it's a decent size IIRC http://homemetalshopclub.org/projects/powder.pdf

    Bare metal tank

I'd go with the clear powder coat. Ask the coater to put it in the oven for a while first and get it nice & dry if you're really worried about rust. Then put on the clear and bake.

Tires for wire spoke wheels - any suggestions ?

Good to hear that. I went through the SW Moto web site and found the 404's were about the only thing I could finds in the sizes that I wanted. It looks like I'll just go ahead and order the tubes at the same time. Thanks everyone.

Tires for wire spoke wheels - any suggestions ?

I need to get some new tires for my street tracker project. The bike is a 1975 and has wire spoke wheels which I want to keep. 18" on rear and 19" on front. I would like to go with a wider front than stock to get close to the tracker look so I may have a new rim fitted. The bike will just be...

Learning to MIG weld - offer your tips & resources

I just bought a Lincoln 140c MIG welder. Not having done any welding since high school ( 40 or so years ago), I'm practicing running beads and finding online resources to educate myself. Youtube has a number of videos but some are really poor. Lots of bright light but I can't see what some of...

    TIG or MIG?

I hope I'm not getting OT but... I just bought a Lincoln 140C and for Mig ( vs flux core w/o gas ), they recommend a Push technique. I'm still learning a lot and would like your opinion as to why you like pulling instead of pushing. So far, I find that with pushing, I can't see a damn thing but...

    Tank Coatings and new tank

I just noticed at my local Chevron station that the Supreme Plus ( 94 octane ) has a label that says it contains NO ETHANOL. My Omar's tank just arrived so this is what I'll be using.

    Polishing made easy - Tip

+1 on the wet sanding. I start with 220 and do it in the basement sink with a slow trickle of water running over it. The brown compound is commonly called Tripoli and will cut through the fine scratches from wet sanding. Next clean the part of all the Tripoli residue left behind. Then buff...

    Vancouver b.c.

I just googled xs650 velocity stacks and got lots of hits. Buying a pair would be way cheaper than making them and maybe getting the angles & dimensions wrong.

A bit hard to tell from the picture but it looks like you need a lathe; mine is a mill. Are those velocity stacks ?

I do a little of that too. Not overly large or complex though. A few of my projects : http://www.ldrider.ca/cnc/cnc-index.htm

Cutting off excess brackets - tips ?

As part of my street tracker project, I've cut off excess brackets and ground down the welds. Some will be hidden when the bike is reassembled. Some will be exposed for the world to see and I 'd like to have the finished frame look like it never had these brackets. But, when they were originally...

    Vancouver b.c.

I just bought a small mig welder. I haven't unboxed it yet and I haven't welded anything since high school nearly 40 years ago. I will likely start a bit of welding on my frame early in January if I don't burn the house down first. Are you feeling lucky ?

    tank options

Given that it's winter in most parts, and you may not be riding for a while, I'd fill it with gas, leave it off the bike and see how thing change, if at all, over the next few months.
