There's a round silver electrical component under the frame tube below the gas tank on my '76. It is a 12V Nippondenzo something. What does it do?

I'm getting close to getting my rebuild running. I bring my fuel tank down from the top shelf where it's been forever. It full of rust. Spotless when I put it there 1( years ago. Victim of forget and neglect. How do I clean it? Or do I replace the tank?:wtf:

I am getting ready to rebuild the engine in my '76 xs650. I have found xs650 direct here in Canada. Are they dealing parts worth using or am I better off going to a Yamaha dealer for OE parts.
