The only way to rule out the eadvance is to swap in mechanical advance as far as I know. The advance is a part of your ignition system. Now with lots of information tossed around over the years it's easy to mix up what goes where depending on your model. I would take the whole ignition out and...
Now I am by no means an expert and not even close to being qualified to even respond here but im currently running an ignition test setup.
1. Wire only pamco and e advance per petes directions wwww.yamahaxs650.com
2. Do not connect pma as it is not required to run bike.
3. Ensure solid frame...
enter me in the drawing!
I've just been doomed by moving in with the girlfriend. My dreams along with my budget have been destroyed so winning these would be sweet. Goodluck guys.
Somewhat old post but I figured I throw this out there. My old man showed me this shop by his house. Lots of vintage bike stuff here. Certainly worth look for anyone in the area.

Yeah that screw mod looked appealing after trying to remove those screws and realizing I was no match for them. I did plan to leave the electric start just in case. I don't think Los Angeles traffic would understand me trying to kick start my bike if it stalled during rush hour.
The bike was a basket case when I got it so it never ran. Plus it was missing the points on it so I just decided to take it apart. I have the clutch assembly off (used 2 vise grips and the clutch plates) so once my top end is back from the shop I'm going to pick up some new plates and springs...
So Im in the process of rebuilding my motor. At the moment I have the top end machine work almost done (bore to 2nd, new pistons/rings, and guides so far). Where I'm stuck is whether or not I should split the case. On one hand its going to be a pain the ass on the other its fun to take shit...
I got a 79 that came with mag wheels. of course I wanted spokes so I hunted ebay everyday and found some good deals but finally got a set from a member here. When thinking about cost remember your going to need a brake hub that may or may not be included with the rear wheel.
I'm in El Segundo rebuilding my motor in my bedroom so I can feel your pain. It sucks but on the bright side my apartment smells like gasoline now. Garage Co. was the only business I know locally that deals in vintage bikes everything else is pretty much harley or sportbike shops
The dis assembly began tonight. Some parts ended up being a little worse than I had anticipated
yes my engine stand is a piece of wood.
hard to tell in the last one but the piston rings on the left(right piston from riders perspective) are completely ground down. the motor...
inxs posted this http://www.ytcn.nl/archief/index.php?dir=Yamaha%20Parts%20Manuals%20ALL%201950-1996/XS/
awesome parts manuals for each model
from what Ive seen all the sites people list show the same things. The clarity of the images is different though. some are hard to make out certain...
Yes I'm going to start rebuilding the motor. If there's anything I hate the most it's having to do things twice. I want this motor to be solid without having to worry about taking it out in a year or two to replace something. Haven't opened it up yet but I'm pretty sure I'm just going to replace...
I already posted some of these pics but just got my bike back today and I have nobody to share my joy with so I need people who understand what this means to me. There is no target date to finish. Don't have lots of time or funds so it could be a while. Im going to tackle the motor in the next...
I haven't come across these links yet. I try to collect as much XS info as I can even if its a bit redundant but this is something Ive been missing. I wanted a consolidated parts manual. Thanks.
The tank sits low on the frame(high tunnel). If I only use one fuel will get stuck on half the tank. It looks like its sitting high on the frame in that picture but it actually sits lower in the front
So I just got my tank today wasnt really sure what to expect with it. Over all its not in terrible condition but it does need some love. It has two petcock threads but one was filled in with what appears to be brass. Minor rusting inside with only a couple visible pinholes.
1. What would be...
I've been searching high and low for finished bikes with that rear loop hardtail and I just haven't even come close to finding any. It surprises me because they allow you to order it with any drop and stretch you want and you would think people would jump at the chance for a custom hardtail. The...
