Top end rebuild on a budget.

Actually, I got them bored back in August. I just asked the machine shop to ensure that there was some chamfer remaining. I don't know how much they actually cut, but they didn't charge me extra for any chamfer, so I didn't worry too much about it.

Are these the sort you're referring to? I assumed steel wool was too harsh for the aluminum gasket surface. Good to hear I may be wrong! On that topic, what are your thoughts regarding brass wool?

Top end rebuild on a budget.

Got it. Yeah, it seems to be corrosion more than gasket material. I have some aircraft stripper I could try as well. That's a good tip on the knife. I'm guessing I want something more substantial than a razor blade. I'll give that a (careful) try if the stripper doesn't take any more crud off.

    Another piston ring question

Excellent info, thanks all. Unfortunately, I screwed up the ring installation and broke a ring... I messaged Mitsuo through ebay to see if he sells replacement rings for his pistons. I'm my own worst enemy on this rebuild.

Top end rebuild on a budget.

After 6 months of basket-case status for my bike and a move to a new state, I'm finally resuming my rebuild. Hoping to finish buttoning the engine up before the end of may. A couple of questions have come up. Question 1: Camshaft bearings: how picky to I need to be about the feel? Visual...

    Another piston ring question

Yep, that's what I thought. The chrome finish was the clue for me. However, the lack of a lip/ledge on the wiper ring threw me off a bit. Thanks!

    Another piston ring question

Hi all, I know from a forum search that piston rings are the source of some confusion - e.g. installation order, the fit of various brands, etc. I'm rebuilding my '82 with a set of Cruzinimage pistons, 447 type, 1mm oversize. I understand that stock rings will be stamped with "R##" to...

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

Okay, just dropped my cylinders and head off at the machine shop. Running me $110 for the 1mm oversize bore and $30 for valve + seat cleanup. The machinist was familiar with stellite facing, and assured me they wouldn't cut through it.

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

Ahh, many thanks toomanyxs1bs. I can't be sure that they haven't been ground before, but all indications would suggest I'm the first to tear into the top end, so I suspect that they have not.

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

I didn't mean that I just globbed on some compound and went at it. I spread a light even layer around the valve with my finger before beginning to lap. I'm referring to the re-distribution of lapping compound that occurs during the tap-tap-tapping of the valve into the seat. I think that may...

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

Yeah, I caught that video before I lapped. I imitated the technique as closely as possible, but no dice. My theory now, beside the one proposed by 5twins, is that I didn't mix a sufficient amount of oil into the course compound. It came as a very thick paste, which I tried first without thinning...

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

I probably will have to take this head to a shop, now that I've scored the valve seats with my first lapping attempt, but I was doing my best to keep unnecessary costs to a minimum. I know that lapping by hand is something of a contentious topic, but it certainly has its merits, no?

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

Yeah, that's a fair point on the cleanliness of the head. I'll renew my effort to clean up the carbon deposits before attempting any more valve work. I knew they weren't very clean, but I hadn't thought it was imperative to clean off carbon that wasn't actually encroaching on the valve seat. I...

Valve lapping gone wrong (I think)

I'm about halfway through my top-end rebuild, and I decided to lap my valves while they were out. I'm regretting that decision now. They weren't too bad, but there was a small amount of visible pitting and roughness. Now, I've got these grooved rings around the valve and seat, which is - if I...

Top end rebuild on a budget.

I've got a left inlet valve (pictured) with some moderate pitting on the stem. The rest are all pretty good. The rocker arms have minor pitting on all four contact surfaces. Any good way to clean those surfaces up, or could they be put back into service as is? The pictures valve is definitely...

Top end rebuild on a budget.

Oh I'd prefer not to do this again anytime soon, but if I keep the bike long enough, that eventuality will roll around, no? Okay, so my pistons are sorted out. I'll ask the machinist to put a chamfer on the bottoms of the barrels after the bore. In the meantime, I'm moving on to the valves...

Top end rebuild on a budget.

I don't mean boring beyond 78. I meant beyond the 76mm bore I'm getting. I just don't want to limit my options for future rebuilds by going straight to 4th oversize on this one. But, as others have pointed out, re sleeving, replacing the jugs, or going to a big bore are all valid options down...

Top end rebuild on a budget.

I had no idea there were standard oversizes beyond 4. But regardless, yeah that's my thinking. If I understand correctly, you can safely take 3mm out of the stock liners, so there's room to grow. Thanks!

Top end rebuild on a budget.

Ahh, well I already pulled the trigger on the purchase. No harm in boring 1mm over instead of 0.25 or 0.5, I figured. If I end up needing to re-bore a few years down the line, I can re-sleeve or go to a big-bore.

Top end rebuild on a budget.

Great, I appreciate the links. After reading through both of those, I'm ready to go for the ebay pistons. I contacted the seller, and he's got only 4th oversize available (no mention of future stock), so I suppose I'll be skipping oversize 1-3 and going straight to a 1mm over bore.
