    Sold / Found / Inactive - 79 Special II

$1500 to folks here first. I have other things that need my attention, so I’m letting this go. Sat from 1994 until October 2016. Runs like a top, could use some cosmetic polishing. Has a Pamco, Mikunis, and euro bars added to it. New tires last spring with 20 miles on them. Located in Lk...

    Swingarm Pivot Bolt

Decided to start a new thread. Got everything cleaned up today to installed the bushings. Upon inspection of the pivot bolt, it has wear marks and pitting from rust. The shaft bushing also has pitting. So I’ll assume it’s replacement for both if I want it to last. I’ll have to place my order...

    Vapor Blasting

Has anyone vapor blasted their cases? I’ve soaked my cases for two days in my parts washer, and I still can’t get the grime off in many places. There’s a local guy that does this and aluminum parts come out looking like brand new. I have a soda blaster that I have used on carbs, but the cases...

    Splitting Cases

Any tricks for splitting my cases. I have all nuts and bolts removed and they are glued together tighter than a drum. I don't really want to drive a chisel between the two surfaces.

    I hate doing stupid $#!+

I was hoping to get my ‘75 frame rolling today and do some fabricating. But I mistakenly installed the wrong triples and now the lower tapered bearing is pressed on my 35mm fork stem, instead of the 34mm. Project is shelved until next weekend while I wait for my new bearings. >:(

    Disc brake sticking

My ‘79 keeps having the front disc sticking. I till have the stock 2-piece brake line installed. Is this the most likely root of the problem?

Another iron horse in the stable: '66 Norton N15CS

Just picked it up yesterday and I've already got the Amal monoblocs off ready for re-sleeving with new parts to be delivered from across the pond. Next purchase will be a drip pan for the garage. :)

    Took top end apart tonight

It's been awhile since I've taken a engine apart. I'm pretty sure that this is not good. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to split the cases, but now I must. Any thoughts as to what would cause this? I picked this up as a basket case awhile back. Also, where should I pick up new piston from?

Should I just powder coat the rims?

I've been working on the rims and they seem like they just might be too far gone with the pitting.

    Stainless Spokes

Where is the best place to get stainless spokes for my '75? Are Mike's decent quality? Thanks

Bike starts hesitating at 4500-5000 rpms

The 79 has been running flawlessly. Today I start it up and it's backfiring a bit at idle. I get it warmed up and take it for a bit of a spin hoping that it was just fuel fouled. It cleared up the issue. I head out for a ride and after awhile hit the highway then it starts to hesitate. I'm...

    Re-spoking wheels...

Has anyone done it and how difficult is it? I need to replace the spokes on both the front and rear wheels. They are badly corroded. I also will have to shine up, or powder coat the rims and hubs while apart. The last part, where is a good place to purchase the spoked? These are shouldered...

    50 deg my....

I was outside during work today and the sun was partially out. Phone said fifty and of course I got the itch. Since it's been a steady 20F lately, I knew I had to get the scoot out when I got home. I fired up the bike and got it nice and warmed up. Gloves? They were in the Harley saddle bags out...

    Got 'er running!

So I purchased a '79 that hadn't ran since '93. I ordered some parts off of Mikes. I should have read a bit more on here, but nothing beats an education based upon bad decisions. I've learned my lesson. I purchased a gas cap seal. It lasted just slightly longer than Styrofoam would have. I put...

'79 Special II startup after 23 years

I've gone through the carbs, cleaned and red-Koted the tank. I have new rubber mounts and hoses coming for the the carb mounting. I have a new master cylinder also on it's way. The rear brakes will also be checked this week. I'm going with gravity petcocks, rather than the original vacuum...

    Petcock and Gas Cap

I recently purchased a 79 Special II. It had 3/4 of a tank of gas sitting in it since '93. I have went through both carbs and they are cleaned and rebuilt. I'm now working on the fuel tank. The petcock looks a bit worse for the wear. It's a bit rough and I don't think a rebuild is in it's...
