    Front fork leg dismantling

Thanks for the tip. I'd tried searching fork oil, etc but didn't think of fork tools. The tip with the 17mm nut on the end of a couple of extension bars did the trick first time! Going to make a more permanent tool now for future use.

    Front fork leg dismantling

During transport my 81SH recently popped the gasket under the allen bolt in the bottom of the RH fork. I currently have the fork partially dismantled as the Allen screw will not undo. The assembly inside which the allen bolt screws in to is just turning. I tried with the fork in the bike and as...

    Starting problems

The original springs on my bike were totally stuffed! No tension whatsoever. I got my new ones from MikesXS. Is there a better source?

    Starting problems

Thanks for the tips. I was trying to point out all the things I had already looked at in the hope there was something obvious I had missed. It now seems clear that I have to go back and start from scratch. I do have BS34s and the idle air jets are fixed but the fuel jets are adjustable. They...

    Starting problems

Thanks, Skull and everyone else. You're right, it is 5A9.*****. I'll certainly try the leads and caps. Peanut, your full message doesn't appear here but believe me advice is exactly what I'm looking for. Apologies if I gave you a different impression.

    Starting problems

Inlet rubbers are brand new, I have a non-vacuum petcock. The colour of the plugs indicates mixture is fairly good - perhaps a little rich!

    Starting problems

No, as I said in the post it's a 4M4, i.e. the Australian model. It still has points, unfortunately.

    Starting problems

Have recently rebuilt my 81 SH (4M4). Timing is perfect, points and tappets are pretty much spot on, Float levels are perfect and carbs have been fully overhauled. Plugs are new. When I start the bike it only starts on the right cylinder (full choke). Once I give it a bit of a rev the left fires...

    Oil for XS

Thanks everyone. I eventually found our local oil manufacturer's recommendation on their website. The oil selection computer in the store didn't go back far enough for my bike. Penrite MC4T 20W50 mineral oil. That's what I'll be using from now on.

    Oil for XS

Thanks, Bob. Also had some tips from Paul, as you can see. I'll stay away from fully synthetic.

    Oil for XS

Thanks for the advice Paul. I had a semi-synth in but had to drain it as the starter motor seal is leaking. Will replace with the same stuff once repairs are done.

    Oil for XS

Anyone know of any reason why I shouldn't use fully synthetic MA rated oil in my '81 XS?

Wanted - Front brake master cylinder cover

Thanks for checking. That's pretty much the same as mine is but mine is quite bad. Have found a new one from the UK, but horribly expensive. Guess I'll just have to grin and bear it!
