    83 build updates

This started out as a Heritage special, so i think it these wheels came along before i acquired it as a project bike.

    83 build updates

Running and riding and feeling happy! Wanted to check in and thank the forum for helping me through an adventure of a build. Once I got the electrics sorted I replaced the swing arm bushings and re did some mounts. Got new front tire and made some side covers out of old license plates. Starts...

Updates. Electrical system works flawlessly. On board led voltmeter monitors voltage and it’s been spot on. Had a bizarre incident. My beanie cap fell out of my bag, onto my chain and got pulled into the primary gear. What a mess! Also the swing arm bushings must be going, but too much wiggle...

    Question on Rotor replacement

Do not get a rotor from MikesXS, they are no good! They are thinner than stock, I wasted 153$ on one in june.

    I. Am. An idiot. Live and learn. That’s why I built this thing. And another lesson is in my head. Follow me on this. Initial problem—-no charge. Solution—MikesXS rotor. New problem—-weak magnet/thin rotor/timing misfire at hi rpm. Solution-rare earth magnet. New problem—magnet flew off and...

Cleaned up the mess and wired in the new battery. Kicked over nice and easy, monitoring voltage on the new battery. Voltage shoots up to 19v as soon as bikes running! Shut down quick. So it seems the regulator rectifier has failed me. That explains why the ballistic battery went up on smoke. So...

    Shakedown breakdown ‘83 sputtering

I don’t have much space so whatever battery I use must be small. Also I’m kick start only so I don’t need a large battery, just reliable. I’d switch to a battery free design but I have already invested so much into rebuilding this system. Two new rotors, ignition coil, tci ignition unit, new...

It didn’t melt enough to reveal the inner workings. I had to cut open the battery box and chisel it out, thankfully it retained enough of its shape to pop out in one piece. Thinking about a gel battery? Any words of wisdom...

Yeah I checked voltage, making sure the “new” rotor was gonna work right. It passes the resistance test at 5.5ohms so I expected it to work properly. Fired right up and had 13 volts at idle, increased rpm raised up to mid 14s. Looked strong and happy. I didn’t monitor the voltages for long, as...

Yeah it looked like the videos I’ve seen of hover boards dying, soooo much smoke. Also the battery came with the original boxes of random parts, I think it’s old, manufactured in 2013 just never used.

Oem rotor on this morning. Fires up, runs great, battery is charging. Off for a local ride. 5 miles later. Stop for gas. Bike won’t start. No power? Pull over to check fuses. Suddenly smoke billowing from electronic box. Lots of smoke. I know that smell. Not a good smell. Something shorting...

Ok . Another round of updates. Decided to hack the magnet out of my old dead rotor, wrecking the face to bits in the process. Installed it in the hole left in my New rotor, where i drilled that magnet out. Drilling a magnet was cool, sparks and molten shit flying. Of course it didn’t fix the...

Hard ride test update. Magnet flew off, 30 miles into a ride. Set another one on there and waited for jb weld to set. Yeah I took a kit. Got home fine. Need a permanent fix. I’ll try to set the magnet into the rotor. Should be stronger there. MikesXS got an email from me. They said they’ll...

    Rear Brake not bleeding/Pressurizing

I had a hell of a time bleeding mine. A friend suggested I use a syringe hooked to the rear caliper bleeder to draw the fluid through, and it worked in seconds. Just a big plastic syringe hooked to a clear tube to the bleeder. Keep reservoir full and pull pull pull on that syringe till all the...

The magnet worked! Revs are strong, battery charges good. Passed the up and down my street test today. Rigorous testing this weekend. What a saga. And a bizarre failure, you’d think spending 153 on a new rotor (to solve charging problem) wouldn’t fuck up the ignition circuit. I got this rotor...

Thanks for the links. I’ll believe it being so odd. I was really really stumped. My first time building a motorcycle, and failed on shakedown. This summer has been super dry and hot..and I’ve been wrenching and working, betcha it’ll storm the day it’s running perfect!! Haha.

I understand how that would be necessary on an old stock rotor but this is three months old and worked perfectly at first. Of course I’ll try it out, anything to get back on the road.

Well. Well. Replaced the ignition coil. No change. Replaced tci ignition unit. No change. Reset cam tension and valves. No change. Checked float levels with clear tube. All good. Unplugged regulator/rectifier to eliminate alternator. And it runs perfect. Perfect. Flawless. Ripping up and down...
