The site is back up! The xs Bible of knowledge is accessible again! lol Just to keep y'all up to date, I cleaned my carbs really well. I completely disassembled and used parts cleaner and compressed air on every orifice. I took the right side cover off to examine if there was any metal shavings...

Really? Ok. That's actually a bit of good news I suppose. Yeah it runs, I've been riding it around a little bit just messing with the carbs and timing. I guess I'll keep going down skulls checklist and get a compression check, check electrical, etc. What about the throttle cable rig? I certainly...

Ok I'll do that next. Thanks for that. Obviously I'm new to this. That looks like a lot of carbon build up. Given the metal shavings in my oil I think I'm destined to take the top end apart anyway. Seems like a good idea to give them a cleaning? Looks like I'll be in for some new handle bars...

Ok. It may be hard to see in the pictures but there is a sort of lip (which is probably part A) that the left intake valve tests on (looks like right at the 45 degree angle). However, the right intake valve seats probably 5mm lower (I guess at the 25 degree mark). Is it normal for them to be...

Thanks for everyone's reply. I wasn't able to get the correct socket for the sump plate plug so I haven't yet examined the sump filter, however, still plenty of other things to do. I disassembled the carbs and took the exhaust off to have a look at the valves. Inside is very dirty and it...

Yeah so the metal shavings are not magnetic so they must be aluminum. Jim's "old man memory" is still sharp. The oil plug is indeed magnetic. I'm not able to get the sump plate off yet to check for the filter for reasons listed above. Before I posted I took a crescent wrench to it and chickened...

No I didn't see any metal, although it was covered in sludge.

Ok yeah sorry for that. I put it in my signature. 1982 xs650. Pod Filters. Mikini VM34 carbs. Straight pipes. No vacuum on the petcock. Thanks for the info in pics. I'll post some soon. I'll have to go get a magnet too to identify whether it's steel or aluminum. Only work I've done so far is...

Alright guys, I hate to start a new thread asking for help so soon but hher I am. So it looks like I get the opportunity to know my bike a lot better than I thought much quicker than I thought. I think I'm in for a rebuild. Not sure. I'll post a video. There are metal shavings in my oil and on...

    Let's See The XS's

Yeah I think I will. So far any work I've done I haven't filmed so tomorrow when I get to the garage, it will be my first video. Nothing exciting. Oil and timing. Or I could just start with paint o_O 2M. Both of us being in central Texas, I think we can do better than Rudy's. Challenge accepted.

    Let's See The XS's

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking in the shadows for months and I just wanted to say thank you so much to all you guys sharing your knowledge. I'm currently going through the, "get to know your bike" checklist. My plan is to film each step and post it for fellow...
