    Painting mag wheels....a tip.

When painting mag wheels with the machined outer rib face I use a light film of axle grease on the surface I don't want the paint on... this serves as the masking (or more accurately as a release agent). As long as you don't go apeshit with the spay patern/thicknes it is easy to come back the...

Using neutral light instead of clutch switch

Has anyone used the neutral light circuit to enable engine start as a replacement for pulling the clutch? I'm dumb enough to need some kind of safety interlock, but having to squeeze the clutch and push the start button at the same time only reminds me I don't have three hands. I'm concerned...

    Fitted valve adjuster screw

Two questions, the first one is can this pit be polished out or is it too bad and or the hardened surface is too thin. Secondly, is it normal to have to Pul the rocker arm shaft every bit of the way until it's free... Mine didn't give up until I pulled them their entire length.

Error Error!!! Fork spring free length

In regards to the 80s bikes with the adjustable Pre-loader cap...The official Yamaha service manual and the Clymer manual Put the spring free length at 610 mm or 24 inches. Everything I've read here and People quoting the Haynes manual generally say 482 mm. .... Which seems correct to me. I...

I think I screwed the pooch (front tire)

Well, according to j & p cycles the proper fitment for the front of my 1983 is a 110 / 90 by 19. So I ordered a shinko 230 touring tire in that size and it just arrived and it is appearing way too fat to fit in the stock fender. It's got a Dunlop k71 on it right now 100/90-19 and it barely...

So what are the best clutch discs to buy for 1983...?

Seems like the choices are limited. Is EBC as good or better than Mikes, Or are there better choices that I'm not finding? I'm a heavy rider so I'm looking for performance first and not low price. Look forward to hearing from you that have been there - done that. Well after google searching...

    Speedometer, tachometer lighting

So I am putting the internals of a 1978 speedometer into my 1983 motorcycle because I like the 120 mile-an-hour divisions. Other than the faceplate and calibration, the only way they really differ is the odometer reset knob and the lighting. The lighting on the 83 is by a single wedge base bulb...

Thin wall quarter inch fuel tubing

Anybody have a good source for some quarter inch fuel tubing that's not 7/16 thick like automotive stuff. I want to replace my fuel and vacuum lines and if I have to I'll find OEM parts I did find a seller on Amazon that sells Briggs & Stratton fuel line and his picture makes it look like it's...

I'll share some data, please share your thoughts.

1983 heritage special with 16600 original miles. Bike appears to have been well taken care of but I do not know how long it may have been sitting.. I did not buy it from the previous owner directly... I got it from a private dealer. It seems to run out of breath around 5000 RPM. It will pull...

Original Yamaha air filters at partzilla

Partzilla cells Yamaha branded intake filters for 80-83 specials for a really good price, but the picture they show makes them look like they're 35 years old because the foam is yellow brown color. does anybody know if these filters are fresh or are they indeed 35 year old stock that's left over?

    New owner thoughts and questions

Hey all, just had a super clean 83 heritage special delivered here in Minnesota where it's 30 degrees. Even with us Oso battery it started up pretty easily with the electric start ran good and everything seems to work except the gauge illumination so I'll guess I'll check the wiring on that...

DCC steel mesh reinforced sump filter

Dime City cycles shows a conventional looking sump filter they claim is reinforced with steel mesh on the inside to prevent blowout. Seems like a great solution to the problem, has anybody tried them. What do you guys think, and where can a guy get some sump gaskets cheap.
