    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

Yeah, I just kinda very carefully gave it the business.

    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

Update: I managed to drill them out on a spare (junk) carb without any drama. Taped off the holes, packed the carb with a paper towel, sprayed it down with a 1:1 mix of acetone and ATF… The heads came out, I got the shanks very carefully with a long pair of needle nose pliers, I’ll tell you what...

    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

I found seals for the butterfly shaft, screws for the butterfly, but I can’t find the butterflies or the shafts anywhere. If I drill out the screws, I risk damaging those. And I’d like to be assured I can get replacements before I mess with that.

    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

I did a fairly thorough rebuild job, wasn’t able to Do you know where I can find some? MikesXS is sold out.

Well I replaced the cable, so that isn’t it.

    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

P.S. I REALLY hate these carb boots.

    1980 Special - Sticky Carbs?

So I’ve been playing with my carbs, they’ve always been a bit “sticky”, and frankly? I’m tired of it. They’re just the standard USDM BS34s (“Bit Sticky”?)… I’m broke and I’m cheap, but I don’t mind spending money on performance if it’s worth it. What should I do? Buy new diaphragms? New slides...

    Battery

It’s that time of the year again! Yep - my dumb ass needs a new battery. Does anyone know the model number for a 1980 XS650 Special battery? Preferably just like a standard Yuasa? Thanks!

    The Perfectionist (engine detailing)

On the subject of rockers and blasting though, how do you get the rockers out? I took off those Philips/JIS covers (like all JIS stuff, it was a bear), tapped out the sleeve with an 8mm socket, but how does the pin for the rocker come out?

    The Perfectionist (engine detailing)

In all fairness, the Dremel-branded ones don’t last very long either. I have a blast cabinet at work, couple types of media too, but I’m a bit nervous about putting engine stuff in a blast cabinet. If you want a good laugh, a guy I know was using a blaster to clean up the engine bay on his...

    The Perfectionist (engine detailing)

I DIDN’T SEE THAT SCREWDRIVER ONE!!!!! That’s a badass lookin’ mill, mad props! I also got a couple of the Dremel brass wheel/brushes for the tougher stuff, man those are a racket! There has to be like some off-brand company making them for $0.02 a piece and selling them in bulk somewhere...

    The Perfectionist (engine detailing)

Just bought an arsenal of assorted brushes from Harbor Freight. They didn’t have any swabs, but I bought just about one of everything. Thankfully it’s Harbor Freight, so it was cheap.

Thanks for the tip! What about steam cleaning?

    The Perfectionist (engine detailing)

So I got two short blocks (plus heads, jugs, etc) when I bought my Special, and it’s always been my intention to just “maintain” the engine that’s currently in my bike, and do a complete teardown and rebuild with one of my spares. That way I can eventually have a nice solid mill, good...

    Pipes...

Not to slag off the previous owner, but when I got my bike it had that rotted 2-into-1 turnout, a stock airbox, and aftermarket jets (I forget what - I only have one set and they’re in the carbs right now - but they’re bigger)... And it’s never really “sounded right”, if you know what I mean...

    Pipes...

Thanks again guys! Say, what jets are you running? Typically - I know it’s a pretty hearty four-stroke, but for what it’s worth, I live in Pittsburgh, and like to ride at least nine months out of the year.

    1. I take it the plate doesn’t come out? 2. I take it the exhaust also flows AROUND that plate, and not just through the little hole?
