Yamaha 650 Society 2023 Smokies Rally

What's the story with those cool panniers on the 75?? Never seen those before. Were they a factory option? Looks so fun, have a great time fellas. Maybe someday I'll make the trek

    74TX650 build log.

@toglhot In the past I've seen bits and pieces of what you're capable of, but man this is so impressive. Your bike came out splendidly. Very jealous of your ability to just machine up whatever you need. There's so much skill in that bike. Well done, sir.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Awesome! Thanks for saving me the trouble of searching. Didn't know if you could pull them/drive the new ones without pulling the cam cover, that's great. My points and advance are gone so it should just be the 5 screws for me. I'll report back with anything of note. Thanks fellas.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Yesterday I realized I'm having the same issue around the cam so will try a set of those 24x40mm. Great tip...I had this same issue with my old cam as well and no amount of grease or polishing the ends of the cam seemed to fix it...glad we've got a better solution! I'd welcome a write up (or...

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

The thing that jumps out at me is the start time of the clips (they're offset). Did you simultaneously record those and just crop the start times? A very simple explanation would be if you inadvertently dragged one of the clips forward or backwards and offset them. (As someone that's...

750 Big Bore Cam Chain Adjuster??

Actually, found 'em. Few pics of Type C measurements I took here https://www.xs650.com/threads/1974-tx650a-restoration-project.57476/post-685855

750 Big Bore Cam Chain Adjuster??

Yeah, Gary hit the nail on the head....it needs to be a D or E, because while the threaded tensioner from earlier ones (at least my original "C" type) can indeed thread in, I believe it's too long to use with the newer-type acorn nut. I had a pic somewhere of this but can't seem to find the...

Sold / Found / Inactive - LH Alternator Cover

Hey gang, Was out for a ride today enjoying some beautiful weather and was very irritated to see I lost my alternator cover somewhere along the way. Anyone have a spare for my 74 that they’d be willing to part with? Thanks all -Somerville

    1977 "garage find"

Welcome Tom. Nice to see a fellow New Englander on here! Good luck with your 77, and echo the folks on here that say the tech section is your best friend. I did a frame-up resto on my 74 using only the factory service manual and this forum.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Wow. Van Islander, your build looks incredible! I like the look of the fork gaiters a lot. Really nice work. The setting looks great....I had a bit of deja vu....I went through all my bike pics and it's no wonder why, haha. Twins!

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

It’s crazy, in the million pictures I took of my bike I can’t find one of just the side stand. And 95% of the time I use the center stand when it’s parked so probably not helpful. I found one that might be useful, if for nothing else but to confirm the one shown in Skull’s parts fiche.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

I didn't see it mentioned (maybe I just missed it), but what did you do for bars? I like them a lot... are they superbike? That's what I have on mine and really like the look and ergonomics.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

@TX650A919 Van Islander Really nice work, it came out beautifully. Totally agree with the comment about the color....I didn't love it when I got the bike, but the Cinnamon Brown grows on you...That paint looks really slick. Congrats on the build and first start-up! @Jim Yes, my original...

Foreign object found when draining transmission oil

Jim to the rescue. That’s what I was afraid of. For some reason the word “detent” was escaping me. But yes, having seen how that mechanism actually worked I couldn’t imagine how the tranny could work without it.

Foreign object found when draining transmission oil

Yeah, looks like that rivet sheared off on the shift star assembly. Based on my recollection of how the tranny shifts, I would imagine you’d have problems shifting without it.

    A long, long project.

Looking really slick. Enjoying this thread quite a bit. You do great work. How’re the hands feeling?
