Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

Hey KentMoney, I bought a new advance unit (which includes the springs) from MikesXS. That didn't solve the problem. I used heat shrink to get the advance within limits, then measured the width of the bob weight with the heat shrink over it to get an idea of how much metal to add to the...

Another question about double wall stock headers

I thought that's how it could be done easily. I haven't pulled the pipe to check for blockage yet as I can't go to the welder 'til tomorrow if it appears clear (to weld the holes). If I send the cut off portion along with the flange, is your experience that they can dial in the bends so as to...

Another question about double wall stock headers

Wow, $35 IS cheap! Probably more here in CA, but overall maybe cheaper than Mikes or 650Central. How did you get the lip that goes into the head done?

Another question about double wall stock headers

Hi Leo, I'm not positive the pipes aren't welded as the bike came with a full 2-1 kerker and the headers were just in a scrap box. I am assuming they are stock '77's though and was thinking the leak was the exhaust going down the header to the lower drain holes, then back up and out through...

Another question about double wall stock headers

So I have these old double walled headers with the drain holes. The pipes were chopped up by someone before they got to me. I had a 12" extension welded on to use them with toga mufflers. I did not use Pete's method of adapting the headers using reducers because of the length of the extension...

Wanted - rear wheel bearing bushing

Benway, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but check out 650Central website Chassis section for a "rear left wheel bearing collar". It fits inside the bearing to bring the bearing ID down to the axle OD. I had to have one made for about $40, so this isn't a bad deal.

    Feedback for MN_TX650

Bought a '78 tank and side covers (dark green ) from MN_TX650. Great to deal with - fair price, excellent description and photos, packed like Fort Knox and shipped fast. +A++!

What's the difference between types of exhaust?

I have a stock '77 except for the pipes. Came with a 2-1 Kerker that sounded good and performed well (stock jetting - maybe a little lean still). Switched to 2-2 Norman Hyde Togas (aftermarket for Triumph). I am not a GOD by any stretch, but if the performance suffered by lack of scavenging...

Fuse blew on Chrylser Reg/Radio Shack Mod

Hello Grinder! I have one main fuse which I believe is a 20A. That did not blow. When I did the Chrysler mod I added the 7.5A fuse as recommended. I think to protect the regulator from a runaway alternator, but now I'm not sure as it might have been to protect the system from a bad...

Fuse blew on Chrylser Reg/Radio Shack Mod

I did the Chrysler/radio Shack mod to my otherwise stock '77D. The system has been working great. Today I went to run an errand. The bike started right up and while I was waiting for the oil to get where it was needed, noticed my headlight indicator light was still on (I also did the...

    What Electrical Parts to Replace

XSLeo - Thanks for commenting! The brown wire was part of my replacement of the old system - it's possible there's a weak connection in there. I think the brown is plugged into the black wire from the alternator and goes thru a 10A fuse to the regulator. I definitely trust RG's...

    What Electrical Parts to Replace

Shoot, I don't recall how I left it and I wasn't at the shop when they checked. The owner, who is very good, didn't seem concerned. I checked with my analog meter when I first ran the engine after the top and got just under 15V with the headlight off (I turn it on whenever I ride, turn it off...

    What Electrical Parts to Replace

Hi RG! I followed Pete's instructions on this mod on my stock '77 and installed a new gel battery. After 50 miles it seems to be working great (thanks Pete!). A good shop checked the output today and found 13.79V at idle and 14.75V at 3500 rpm. I thought this might be okay but I looked...

Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

You're right of course, grizld1. What I was saying makes sense if the slot in the disc is shallower than it is wide, but I think it's the opposite. The big off-idle flat spot is what I didn't know would happen if over-retarded, Thanks! Before the rebuild, I did have a carb pop out while...

Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

Eureka! The easiest thing to do was what grizld1 said Pete suggested, heat shrink on the weight to close the gap between the spine of the weight and its stop. So I did that, but I put a piece of masking tape on the inside face of the stop for additional spacing, then put a tab of heat shrink...

Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

Thanks too RG. I didn't look at my numbers before responding to grizld1, just saw the "61"... both tangs are at .161x" and snug. grzld1 - Uh....I have been meaning to get a compression tester. This engine got bored to the max limit due to a ring of corrosion around the cylinders where the...

Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

Good morning! xjwmx - By "see what I mean" I was referring to your comment to RG about not ever lugging his engine. I like reparte as long as it ain't mean! (It wasn't). I understood immediately what you meant by suggesting lugging for me to clearly hear what detonation sounds like if it...

Timing advanced too far? Will I hole a piston?

Hi Gapper, Your question was for the others, I'm no mechanic, but I would grease the rod if only to prevent rust/pitting.
