Ok, good know! So hook up a battery to the ignition to run the test? Do you know of any good threads describing how to do this?

to add i replaced the carbs prior to the rebuild while the bike was still operating fine.

    First Top end teardown

I replaced the original carbs with the Mikuni VM34 cable driven carbs. Ill have to double check what jets i put in, can't remember off the top of my head. But it still could be a carb issue potentially if my jetting is off. Thats good to know about the timing. it revs fine when in neutral its...

    First Top end teardown

Hey Guys, Finally have an update. So i was able to nudge the bearings in a few mm on each side by tapping on them with a 1" socket. They now are even on both sides and the covers fit on like they should. And no more rubbing! I did a hot & cold compression test: Cold- 100psi R/L Hot-...

    First Top end teardown

Hey Paul, it seemed to be fine after all, but if my acceleration issues persist and the compression test comes out lower than it should. I will be forced to have a look at possible valve leaks.

    First Top end teardown

That’s what i was hoping would be possible. I will do just that and measure. Yeah i didn’t have any leaks coming from there but i did from the engine bolt below the spark plug and from around the bottom of the jug. So i will make sure they all are re-torqued to the most current lb specs. (i...

    First Top end teardown

Thanks 5t, ahh yes, that was going to be my second guess! Intuitively it didn't look right hanging off the end and I neglected to take pictures prior so I went with what "looked right" and made the bearings flush with the inside of the case. So now, a couple questions...is it possible to move...

    First Top end teardown

It could be Mikes. It was in the engine from PO so im not quite sure where it came from. However, there was no "scrapping" issues prior to my disassembly of the top end. So that's why I'm questioning my tightening technique. On another note, I got 100psi on a cold compression test, so im eager...

    First Top end teardown

Thanks Sticky. duly noted if i indeed need to pull the engine i will retest with kerosine! Regarding the ATU, is it possible to over tighten the “sprocket screw thing” on the right side causing the magnet to hit the screw on the left side? i ask because i tightened the screw a little tighter...

What have you done to your XS today?

i put the engine back in the bike, had an issue with acceleration, about to run some diagnostics :umm:...hopefully i don’t have to pull it again  could use some input! http://www.xs650.com/threads/first-top-end-teardown.57337/#post-646727

    First Top end teardown

So i hit the valves one more time, and got them looking much nicer. finally was able to finish reassembling the engine found tdc and re linked cam chain and got the engine back in the bike. Adjusted the valves to E- .006 I-.003, and with fingers crossed the bike started right up. idles and revs...

    First Top end teardown

Thanks for the reply. Duly noted. Ill make another pass at it with some paint remover and polish. Some of that residue on the exhaust valves especially aint budging and I didn't want to go at it with more abrasive material potential messing them up somehow.

Ended up lapping them one more time and that seemed to do it. Let the re-assembly begin.

    First Top end teardown

Just finished cleaning and lapping my valves and valve seats nothing to write home about but I've included some before and after pics...its kind of therapeutic haha...I did the water test, right side valves are ok...left side valves are giving me a run for my money! I've performed the water test...

Awesome, thanks for all the detail. I'll try out this method. The pictures are really helpful in terms of what to look for. Hopefully they're not too bad! Ill post some pics throughout the process.
