I did. Still didn't work. I'm assuming it was just a shotty cut all around. Double checked this one too make sure it wasn't the gas cap and it opened right up.

Problem solved! Realized I was wearing my mechanic's coveralls the last time I had it. Kids have been apologized to, and I guess I'll have to go get a new spare made.

It says Yamaha on the plastic, though.

Could the pieces found in the oil be safety wire? I can't really think of what it would have been used for where it could end up in there, but that was my first thought upon seeing it.

Exploratory surgery has revealed more exposed wires. Looks like the harness was rubbing in a couple of spots. I assume it was grounding out on something and the monster fuse allowed it? Then the wires just got hot and started cooking?

Could it be from vibration? I have no garage or carport, it sat under a cover all winter. Could that type of exposure to the elements have done it? Again, I know almost nothing about electrical.
