Excellent info - thank you @fredintoon ! I took the girlfriend bar-hopping last night and some initial impressions were braking really needs improving, so the front brake system will be looked at closely. Also, I notice once the bike warms up, the clutch seems like it doesn't like to shift...

Scary stuff @5twins !! I also had to replace the handlebar bushings - the rubber ones were totally shot, that greatly improved the steering feel. To be honest, whatever the bars actually - are really quite easy on the wrists. If the stock ones are as bad as you say, I'll keep the ones that are...

Very interesting information @5twins - thank you very much! If I find a stock bar I'll definitely buy it. Never been a fan of high bars till now :D

Thank you @xjwmx - The bars are standard as far as I can tell from reference photos. My XS750 is a cafe racer rebuild so I can't really compare the two. You are correct though, there's two tank shapes: 1. Square shape tank on the D/2D models 2. Tear drop shape on the E/SE models

Hey guys, long time, no post! A bit of an update from me: After a thorough service, new chain and a new Delkevic exhaust (the original was unfortunately rusted out) I've been enjoying riding this magnificent machine. The comfort is addictive! The next step is getting the side covers repainted...

Thought I might turn this into a running project thread :D Main objective is to clean, restore, maintain and repair and replace parts as they're identified. I've had a little more time with her during the week and today I detailed the rims, which came up better than I expected

Thank you all for the wonderful advice/welcome :) @jetmechmarty - thank you for the excellent reference picture. To your point, I took a photo of the Speedo: I've found the VIN which is JYA4N900 7 BA015076 which will help identify the bike, if I'm reading the VIN charts is an '81 HS - could...

Hi Everyone, greetings from Sydney, Australia! I've just pulled the trigger and bought an '81 XS650 Heritage Special which I just got home. Needless to say, I'm thrilled with the bike. I haven't been able to get up close and spend time with the bike but from the close-ups I've had, she seems...
