Lose the starter IMO, it's just a lot of excess weight, make sure you take out all of the related wiring too.
Make sure you plug the hole with something or you won't have to worry about oil changes.
Any chance it's from something like one of the valve covers, or the camshaft seal, or head gasket? Mine seems to have very minor leaks in a couple places - figure it's just mimicking the bonnevilles!
Looks like some serious frame work. Also looks like a lot of work left. As for the foot pegs, are there any included at all? It is probably set up for rear sets if anything at all.
When you think you've figured out which jets you want, take your old ones (for a sample) into a local shop with a dyno machine. They will likely have a box of old jets, you can sort through and find the matching jets in the size you want. Pick up a few extras b/c you won't likely get it right...
There are so many bike choices out there, that there is no reason to ride one that doesn't suit you. I like my xs b/c it's different than your average bike on the road. It is a classic, it's fun to work on, you can actually see the motor, and the variety of things you can do with it (bobber...

Good luck with the boat! And yes lot's of interest in the old xs, there have been several barn finds around here that disappeared so fast it wasn't funny!
80s had an electronic ignition - which means no points. So under your cover it should be empty. And I believe ( but not 100%) that you don't have anything under the right side either.
It's clean and not too far from original (except the silly forks) - leave it alone for someone who wants to restore one. There are enough hack jobs and incomplete chops out there to pic up cheap and finish.
And before I get burned at the stake, I have no problem with chops, bobbers, I...
Check the ADVrider forum in the THUMPERS or OLDS COOL sections. Not saying that someone here hasn't had an XL175 at some point, but there are forums where you will get more help about them than here.
Remove the springs and weights, behind them is an odd looking nut that you can tap loose with a hammer and punch, with it off the advance mech. will come off. I believe you may need to remove the nut on the end of the cam (very small one) and remove the round collar off the center rod. Once...
I bought carbs and pipes through 650motorcycles.com. It was a disaster. Took over 6 months of hounding, and finding the owners' other internet businesses to contact them through for me to finally get my parts.
Now from what I understand Bertaut SR. was a great xs race tuner back in the day...
