Rear disc brake with spoke wheels.

Like BigJimmy said, Omar's rear wheel conversion will get you a rear disc brake for a wire wheel... http://www.omarsfiberglass.com/street-tracker ... but the OEM front hub (that the kit is designed for) is narrow between the flanges because the spokes need clearance from the rather massive...

    PMA high output issue

The brown and green wires have me curious. That sounds like the stock reg/rec, which runs brown and green wires to the brushes for the electromagnetic rotor. http://www.650rider.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=3194 The PMA systems just have 3 "in" (from the alternator), and the black...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Excuse me while I take off my helmet as a show of respect to XSLeo. The key was indeed the culprit. Tonight I fit both rotors, with & without the key installed. WITH the key they both wobbled. A lot. WITHOUT the key installed both rotors spun dead true. Impressively true. So we can chalk this...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

That caught my attention, too. The similar location of the corrections made to the rotors could just be an indication of consistency in the manufacturing process. I believe these rotors are unique to the XS650 application. They probably start as Banshee rotors, but they get a different size key...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

The saying I seem to live my life by is; "If you have a problem, throw money at it until it goes away."

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Correct. I had checked into getting the rotor trued and it was just too expensive. But the rotor wasn't making contact with anything when mounted on the bike, so by that measure it was still 'good'. I figured that if I was going to run an out-of-square rotor, I could at least get it balanced so...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Received the flywheels back from balancing... XS Charge (from a complete kit) Mike's XS (purchased separately) The numbers look like this: - Stock rotor (electro-magnet); out 0.08 oz-in. - PMA rotor #1 (XS Charge); out 0.18 oz-in and corrected to 0.03 oz-in. - PMA rotor #2 (Mike's XS); out...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Spot on! When everything returns from the balancing shop I will do just that. Plus, I saw a video... ...that shows using a lapping compound to polish off any high spots on the shaft & flywheel. I'm looking forward to having this all sorted out.

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Update; I checked with a machine shop about correcting the runout on these two aftermarket flywheels. I was told it would cost more to true them than what they are worth. I emailed Hugh's Handbuilts to see if they have any experience/feedback/thoughts on the runout/balance of these aftermarket...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

I bolted on another XS Charge flywheel (one from a complete kit), and the runout was noticeably less, even though by all appearances the two flywheels are identical. I hope to get a dial indicator soon so I can get real readings for comparison. I also may check to see if any shops around here...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

http://www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/7169/7169inst.php There appear to be two systems; one as charging unit (dynamo) only, and the other includes ignition. http://www.powerdynamo.biz/deu/systems/lists/yamaha.php The PMA + Ign is a pretty elaborate system, complete with electronic advance...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

The stock system crapped out, so I'm switching to a PMA so that I can run the bike without a battery. A KZ500 stator, FZ1000 regulator, and capacitor are installed & wired up. The only piece missing was a flywheel. I guess the only way to get an OEM-quality flywheel would be to get an actual...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Yes, this is what I'm thinking, retiredgentleman. I'm still hoping to hear from people who have installed one of these to tell their thoughts; - Is the excessive runout not an issue, or is it a nagging concern? - Are there added vibes or is there no noticeable difference? - Or, has no one...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Thanks for the input, TooMany. I had checked that thread, but these PMA flywheels are a different beast, and I have a feeling that the tolerances I'm seeing may be considered acceptable by the manufacturer (made in China?). Like you, the wobble just doesn't look right to me. I'll pull the...

PMA flywheel runout / balance question

Gentlemen, While checking the installation of a new Banshee-type flywheel (an XS Charge unit with a Woodruff key), I noticed that it had a noticeable amount of runout when the motor was turned over -- both axially and radially. Total movement is about 1-2 mm measured at the outer edge of the...

    MikesXS 2 into 1 Exhaust

Hey Pete, Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but do you have any pictures of your Kerker system? I've been trying to find an exhaust system from the '80's (I think it was an Alphabets system, but it could also have been a Kerker or Hooker) that looked like TT pipes but then merged 2 into 1...

Pamco + Banshee PMA: Install which first?

I believe what blackbetty was referring too was changing the width on the woodruff key, not filling it down to nothing. Some of the old piece-it-together PMA installations used the XS woodruff key to index a Banshee rotor/flywheel, but the slot in the Banshee rotor is narrower than the XS key...

    Forks by Frank

Just posting props where due... I needed a set of custom fork legs for a front end swap I'm doing on my XS650. Frank's was basically my only choice. First, I sent out Frank's "Contact" email form to do things the easy, Internet way. Heard nothing back for 2 weeks. Then I called and...
