    offroad tires

No 19" Duro... Duro has a 21" front tire... I mixed and matched on mine. V Rubber on the rear and a Continental TKC-80 on the front... worked well together on and off road but if you ride a lot of road the tires go fast. Maybe 3500 miles before the knobs round off and handling goes downhill...

    offroad tires

Been there, done that, try: Vee Rubber VRM-163 dual sport motorcycle tire: 120/90-16 (tubeless). They have a 19 inch front tire too. Both tires are a size narrower than stock but work fine and are actually decent both on and off road. You need to shop the internet to find them but the price...

    Cutting Stock Exhaust

I downloaded your photo and marked it up. The arrow is where people typically cut through the whole thing, both outer layer (muffler) and inner header pipe. The dashed lines show how the header acually extends into the muffler. Best if you can very carefully remove the outer layer without...

    Cutting Stock Exhaust

There is an inner pipe which is the header and the length is tuned. If you cut this you lose low end and mid range punch. If you manage to salvage the inner pipe it will be worth it.

What onroad /off road tires should I buy for my 79 Special?

The XS650 is quite suitable for dirt roads. I run Vee Rubber VRM-163 Motorcycle Tires, decent dual sport tires that fit the Special models and are tubeless as well!

Im going to drive from CA to NY on my 650 what should I do not to blow up

I have a 1981 XS650H with original stock charging system. Some years back a poster on one of the 650 forums was going on about how he routinely used an electric vest. I was skeptical but tried it and in the years since have many hours of running my 40 watt electric vest. I think that if you...

Im going to drive from CA to NY on my 650 what should I do not to blow up

The XS650 is capable but expect to do maintenance along the way. For example, I was on a 1400 mile trip when I noticed the gas mileage dropped considerably... inspection revealed the tire had shifted and was rubbing on the swingarm. During the same trip I had to replace the turn signal...

    Retarded

XSJohn experimented a lot... and shared his experiences... I decided to try one of his suggestions "gear it tall but retard the timing" I tried the stock 17/34 USA gearing for a couple years, but it wasn't pleasant for freeway cruising. Then, I really enjoyed running a 30 tooth sprocket for...

Any Exhaust mufflers available for the xs650, without needing rejetting?

You might try using older stock harley mufflers... say 1990s era before they went to catalytic converter mufflers... mufflers off a sportster or dyna model.

What have you done to your XS today?

Indexed throttle to assist with carb tuning, I reckon.

Have a torn 77 seat, I can't find a seat cover that looks like it. Help me out?

There is another option. Use a curved upholstery needle and heavy duty thread and stitch it up. Not too tight, just so the vinyl lays flat... it is ok if the stitches cross over a slight gap in the vinyl. Then use black acrylic paint (small tube from art or craft store) to paint over the...

    How fast is your bike???

It could be the clutch is slipping. Does it seem to rev up real high? Clutch slipping. Adjust the clutch... maybe need to replace clutch plates. What kind of oil are you running? Car oil can cause clutch slippage.

    Port filler

The website says up to 250 degrees F. I have measured xs650 heads and they can get hotter than 300 degrees. I noticed the site suggests this epoxy can be used on intake ports... I suggest they mean on water cooled engines.
