What gauge wire for starter motor?

I believe the starter is grounded through its' mounting bolts. The wire from the solenoid to the starter is to sent current to the starter. Isn't that correct?

18 inch or 16 inch rear wheel

I had a 16 inch on a 79 Special, and my 80 Special II came with a 16, which I switched to a 18 inch rear wheel. I didn't notice much difference between the two. I think the 16 tire had a taller profile than the 18 does, so the circumference of both are maybe the same or close. I think the...

What have you done to your XS today?

Yesterday I started by carrying the engine from my 80 up the cellar stairs and out to the garage. Heavy. Do they gain weight over the years? Thirty years ago it didn't seem quite so heavy. Disassembled frame comes up next, with new paint on it. Motorcycle was disassembled to paint rusty...

    Stripped exhaust mount/footpeg mount stud

My 1980 650 special had that same issue. I cut off the threaded portion of the stud, then drilled and tapped the unthreaded portion of the stud. I used a replacement stud that had a reduced diameter on half of the length (8mm I think) and the other half of the stud was 10 or 12 mm (the...

    What is this part?

No, the condensers are in the center of the upper engine mount. This part has two wires exiting it. One wire is a yellow one and the other is a yellow with a black (I believe) chaser.

    1974 Yamaha Tx500 Help

Nice van. The cylinder heads for the TX500 and XS500 1973- 1975 had a two piece head. They were also a source spot for oil leaks. In 1976 the head was changed to a one piece head, this was much better. The earlier heads had trouble spot of cracks developing from the spark plug to the exhaust...

Need help to identify this part

Until I saw the first of the three pictures, I thought it looked like the top half of a valve guide.

What have you done to your XS today?

Today I painted the swingarm of my disassembled 80 XS650. Seventy degree weather in March made it possible. Hoping and planning for complete assembly of bike in late spring. Not a show winner. Actually, off season(winter) rider.

I would like your opinions on engine storage.

So, I have a spare engine for my 80 XS650 that is all apart and cleaned and ready for assembly. I am not planning on using it for a couple years. I don't necessarily want to leave it unassembled with all the parts wrapped in plastic bags and stored in containers in a friendly environment...

What have you done to your XS today?

I removed the seat from my 77 XS650 to repair a rip in the cover. The cover was ripped from a collision with a car turning in front of me numerous years ago. Also received a cam chain tensioner for a SR500 to modify for the XS650. Thanks to whomever posted the procedure in the Tech section...

Considering a backup ignition system on my 77XS650 for a long trip

I am considering riding my 77 XS650 to California from NY this spring. Of course I would like to have a trouble free ride, one concern I have is the ability of the alternator and ignition system to make it all the way. It is working fine now. This is what I am thinking. I have an extra...

What have you done to your XS today?

I have kind of a similar situation going on. My 80 special ll is stripped down and frame painted. Waiting for my grandson (6 years old)to arrive from California, to "help me" with replacing original engine back in frame and celebrate Christmas.
