    Boretech electrtonic ignition.

I'd be interested in seeing the pics, and reading your opinion on how the system performs. Not knocking Pete's system at all, as I know it is a great system, but I am interested in running an ignition with electronic advance vs mechanical off the cam so I can run a PMA at some point. Plus my...

    digital ignition

Thanks mrriggs. That's what I figured, but I currently have a TCI, and am trying to think of a way to make something work. I've got no issues with my TCI currently, aside from having to replace the TCI resistor last year. 30 year old electronics have their shelf life, and I'm thinking it would...

    digital ignition

Subscribing just to see how this goes. Rhetorical question: Would it be possible to make a digital ignition cam triggered vs. crank triggered if one wanted to run a PMA?

new to the forum... looking for some help.

+1 on Bob's for parts anyway. 1325 East Elwood Street Phoenix, AZ 85040. Quite a few XS650s in the 'Yamaha section' as they call it the last time I was there, but you'll be hard pressed to piece a full bike together. Most of the ones I saw, and you have to dig for them, were pretty well...

You know you ride an xs when.....

When you spend weeks scouring posts, reading carb manuals, checking cam chains, valve clearances, carb tuning, fouling plugs, only to find out you didn't use solid core spark plug wire.......

Keihin flatslide PWK carburetor, oppinions, issues?

To be honest, I didn't check the plugs after last night's run so I'm not sure if it's flooding or running lean. I checked them after the previous run, and am showing a little lean on the left side, and rich on the right. Not sure why. Float settings are identical and moving freely, jets are...

Keihin flatslide PWK carburetor, oppinions, issues?

So mrriggs, what's your final setup on these carbs then? I'm still having a hell of a time getting these dialed in. I'm running a 40 slow jet and a 125 main jet. Took it out for a short ride last night and at WOT I'm still choking out badly and had to limp the bike home. Wouldn't run right after...

fuel still leaking out of left air filter

Just went through this on my new Keihin carb kit on the left side. Mine turned out to be the float level. J

    1980G Build

Yep, everything in black minus the frame bits are done with Line-x truck bed liner. It turned out to have more shine than I had hoped, but no worries about gas spills ruining my paint. Or anything else for that matter. I really dig the sound of the pipes. Nice low throaty rumble without all...

    1980G Build

Well, I'm finally getting somewhere with this build. Slowly getting the carbs dialed in after fixing the cam timing. Took it out for a short 10 miles spin to check the plugs, and still have some work to do there but it's getting really close. I want to send a big thanks to everyone one this site...

    Spark Plug wires and caps

+1 on the auto parts store stuff for the wires. I just grab a couple of 3 footers, cut the ends off and thread onto the coil and the caps. J

    Keihin carb kit mix screw

Yeah, I think I've read every post regarding these carbs. Kind of wish I would have waited for the reviews to come in before pulling the trigger, but lesson learned. A new set of needles is definitely in the future. I just want to get the baseline dialed in first, and then fine tune from there...

    1980G Build

Quick update: I ended up being off a tooth on the cam. Got the motor loose and tilted in the frame and got it corrected. Got it fired back up again. Definitely an improvement. Got the cam tension set again, and valve clearances set. Still working on dialing in the new carbs. Fouled the plugs so...

    Keihin carb kit mix screw

See, that's what I found on some websites, but then found conflicting info on others. Thanks for clearing that up 5twins. Much appreciated. manofsteele - I'm back to running the jet sizes that originally came in the carbs. A 30 slow jet was running really lean, and a 40 was fouling my plugs...

    Keihin carb kit mix screw

Quick question for anyone running Mike's Keihin kit. I'm still trying to dial these things in. Which direction richens the mix, and which leans on the mix screw? I can't seem to keep the bike from running rich. Back to running a 35 slow jet and a 125 main jet. Thanks, J

    1980G Build

Hey Grizld1, thanks for taking the time to answer my PM and posting back. I will give this a shot and see what the results are, although I'm pretty sure I already have my answer. I printed out a degree wheel as well so I can verify 100% what the deal is. I'm going to try and pad the frame up and...

    1980G Build

Searched and found a post from Grizld1 on the old rider site and here is a quote: "your cam has a 36-tooth sprocket turning at 1/2 crank speed, so 1 tooth=10 degrees of cam rotation=20 degrees of crank rotation" So I'm reading that even at one tooth off I'm going to be 10 degrees off. I've...

    1980G Build

Well, comparing my new photo to the above, it looks like my cam is off. :banghead: DAMN. Looks like I've got to tear the motor out. And yes, that is a coffee stirring straw. Fits in that hole like it was made for it.
