ok, thanks retiredgentleman. appreciate the advice. also, went out and revved the motor while it was sitting on the centerstand. noticed it was buzzy on the highway but man!!! it was vibrating worse than my harley and scooted backwards on the centerstand itself. carbs will be coming off in the...

    Full throttle, bogs down...

I have a 1979 XS650 Special. Stock everything, except 2 into 1 short pipes going down right side. Even has stock airbox and side covers. Starts good, runs good. Full throttle, she bogs down and actually slows down, especially on highway at 65 mph. Thats when I have to throttle back for it to...

    Vacuum style carbs....

Thank you, retiredgentleman. And yes, I have the stock vacuum operated petcocks. In THEORY, should they not stop the flow of gas to the carbs with the engine off, even if there is an issue with the carbs? I have checked on Mikesxs.com...............the non-vacuum petcocks are on backorder.

    Vacuum style carbs....

Question about vacuum style carbs..... A 1979 XS650 Special with BS38 carbs is leaking out gas into the left airbox while not running. Let's say the floats are stuck/set incorrectly. Should the petcocks NOT allow gas to pass through because there is NO vacuum pulling gas out of the tank? And...

Rebuilding Yamaha Vacuum Operated Fuel Valves (Petcocks.)

Thank you, gggGary, for the post. Acquired a 79 XS650 Special last week. After I put gas in it, started leaking out of left carb while parked. Followed the post and left petcock had the remains of an insect and plastic filament between diaphragms. Put back together, no more leak. Took apart...

    Leaking gas.....

Just figured out why gas was leaking out of left carb on my newly acquired '79 XS650. Wasnt leaking gas when i bought it. I even test rode it and it rode good and hard. No oil leaks, good looking bike. Put it in the back of the truck and all was well for 200 miles. Stopped to get gas in truck...

Alrighty, then......got the answers i was looking for. 5twins is right....slightly tighter coils on one end. And yes, i DO have a CLYMER manual. The pic has all the parts to the valve laid out on a flat surface and seperated. And, of course, a nice grainy image with dark parts photographed...
