1977 XS650 Pet Cock is not being a good Pet

77 With regard to left and right, it is all relative to you being seated on the bike in the riding position. However if you put the petcock levers on the wrong side, they will be on RESERVE when in the ON or down position. I found this out the hard way once when I had them on the wrong sides and...

    What is this?

Tough luck, that looks like a cage from a failed ball bearing.

    Justice Antonin Scalia

Yeah, my mistake gggGary, I did wonder why it wasn't shut down since "It's not allowed" I shouldn't have opened that post. P.S. Always enjoy your XS posts!

    Justice Antonin Scalia

All this political BS. I've read 10 or 15 posts and not the first mention of an XS 650. WTF has happened to this site?

What is the average age of this group ?

Shaas I realize this is an ancient thread. We have similarities, I turned 61 yesterday and also bought a Bridgestone 90 Sport (from my dad) when I was 16. Had a few dirt bikes, a Ducati 165, a '71 XS650 in '72, a '48 Panhead and today still ride a '77 XS650D which I bought new in '78. I...

    No reserve?

Yeah, I found that out the hard way. My petcock "handles" were on the wrong sides so I ran out of gas with the handles in the down position. Like you said, they were really on reserve.

White stuff building up on gas cap

I like your bike. Have one just like it that I bought new. Mine has Superbike bars also. I'm fortunate to have ethanol-free gas nearby. Good luck with your search for some. Ethanol sucks!

A part I could use but Mikes don't make it.

5twins, I'm sorry, but you sound a little sarcastic. When I suggested using a short socket, it was before I saw your post about the "wobble" extension (which I thought was a good idea) I've always enjoyed learning from your experience. I thought the guy was having to remove the points plate and...

A part I could use but Mikes don't make it.

Since I have a '77 with points, I'm not familiar with covers with "nothing inside them" Thanks for the response.

A part I could use but Mikes don't make it.

I made a very short socket, for that purpose. However, I also ground a little off of the top corner of my 3/8" drive torque wrench. (Really didn't take much) I have been using that "extra-short" socket for 37 years on my '77D. Give it a shot. . . . It will save you a lot of extra work when you...

survivors: pics of your unretouched original (ish) XS

The motor is stock on my '77 which I bought new in March '78. I have added vm34 Mikunis with K&N filters, Superbike bars, a bar snake, tapered roller bearings in the steering, Halogen H4 light, Koni Shocks, and a Jardine 2 into 1 pipe. I drilled the brake rotor to lessen the unsprung weight. I...
