New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Yeah, that's why I went with new. Easier to source, but they bring their own hassles (see "this thread"). I swore I'd never go back to a carb bike, but here I am again.

    Sump filter.

I've been looking at this.... http://www.smedspeed.co.uk/sumpfilter.html Seems like an easy improvement. (And he now CNCs his own plate.)

Yeah, a Dremel would clean that up nicely.

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Definitely planned to do so, but I meant if the body still leaks, is it worth using a gasket?

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Plan of attack for leaking petcocks: (For reference) Turn off petcocks and idle off remaining gas in the lines. Disconnect fuel lines from either side. Remove tank bolt, and remove tank. Add some lubricant to the rubber tank mounts (as per a recommendation I came across on this site.) Flip...

To include the after photo: I imagine this tolerance issue may well exist anywhere two surfaces meet on these aftermarket parts.

has compression, spark, and fuel but won't fire / start - cam chain issue?

+1 on the battery. When you say "carbs work", do you mean they are totally clean inside. Meaning the needle and jets aren't clogged or covered with varnish, and the float bowl move freely? Sounds like a bike with a lot of CHARACTER.

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

I might still have some fuel resistant gasket maker after installing a fuel pump in a Husky, but it's probably all dried out now. If so, I'll look for the Hylomar. Thanks for the tip!

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Okay, good notes, folks. Thank you all. @MaxPete, I'll take it apart and see what it looks like inside. Are you saying it could be leaking from the screw holes instead of the housing? (I suppose fuel will leak from anywhere.) Looks like I have some work to do this weekend. (In addition to...

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Gotcha. (Yeah, my vacuum petcocks leaked from every conceivable spot.) Ah, I see. I was just looking at your thread today. Nice work!

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Hey, Melnik. I suspect it'll be the back to the main case where there is a gasket held onto by 3 screws. I'll try tightening the one that leaks more, and if it reduces the drip frequency, then I will assume the gasket isn't up to the task. Have you had to pull your tank and start the bike...

New petcocks leaking on 1979 XS650

Hi all. New member here, so hello. I've been enjoying some of the restore threads. I'm the new owner of a 1979 XS650 Special. The bike has new gravity petcocks installed when my local shop was syncing the carbs. Both petcocks are leaking. (One more than the other.) I believe they're...
