What have you done to your XS today?

No progress today on account of domestic chores. Insured the bike from 1st June. Gives me an incentive to get it going and on the road by end of the month.

    Any Harley guys here?

Good decision to buy the Evo I reckon. Sounds like a great bike.

What have you done to your XS today?

A productive morning today. A couple of warm and dry days at last certainly helps. New battery arrived and installed but not connected just yet. Camshaft timing checked and OK, that's in another thread. Left side engine cover installed and clutch adjusted. As suggested here some where, the...

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

OK, a productive morning in between domestic chores. Set up a DTI on left side inlet valve (closed). Rotated the crankshaft anticlockwise until DTI just moved. Caught it at 0.002" valve lift. The manual says the left side fully advanced timing mark is at 38 degrees btdc. The manual says the...

The Evo for me too. I would just get rid of the ridiculous handlebars and leave it be.

Right side oil filter cover leak

Oh dear. At least you now know why the cover was leaking oil.

camshaft bearing wear on valve cover

A bit of a lottery? There's nothing there that can't be recovered I would say. But that's only from the pictures shown here. I would want to understand the condition of the rest of the motor before committing to expensive repairs on worn valve gear. Eminently recoverable, but not cheap and the...

    Exhaust tape??!

I have seen a good number of header pipes cracked under wrapping. The wrap causes the steel to overheat and that causes cracking. The only justifiable reason I can think of for wrapping a bike's header pipes is to hide damage. Personally, I would insist the wrap is removed and I'd inspect the...

    Agreed 100%.

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

Just three nuts to check inlet valve timing. I guess it's moot which is the easiest. Anyhow, thanks yet again for helping me out.

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

For completeness, this is a screenshot of the page in the Yamaha manual for checking inlet valve opening point with a DTI. Inlet valve opens at 36 degrees btdc. Fully advanced timing mark is at 38 degrees btdc. One tooth error in camshaft timing is 10 degrees. So it should be pretty obvious if...

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

Many thanks @Jim there's quite a bit to take in there. I'll read carefully.

    XS2 Won't start - Condenser Fault?

I don't know of an easy way to test a capacitor (condenser). I just fitted new ones as it's cheap and easy to do.

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

Thanks. I thought the "T" was TDC, now I understand the line to the right of T is TDC. What I see reading the manual is the inlet valve should open at 36 degrees btdc or around 9/10 of the distance from the TDC mark to the fully advanced mark. The manual says a timing error of one tooth is 10...

camshaft bearing wear on valve cover

Absolutely. The bit I suggested is the simple bit. There's a reason for what we see.

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

Thank you for that. Your experience is what I would expect to see with a stretched camchain. I have just been reading the Yamaha shop manual. I believe I can verify camshaft timing by just removing one inlet valve cover. Basically, the manual states the inlet valve lifts off it's seat at 36...

camshaft bearing wear on valve cover

Good luck. Nothing to lose? Done properly, I believe you have a good chance of a successful fix.

Ah...... my apologies for not understanding. I will try again. Thanks for taking the interest in this. It's appreciated.

camshaft bearing wear on valve cover

Pretty much, yes. But whether it works depends on two things. First, the wear is not so much that the product cannot fill the gap. Second, total freedom from oil, grease or dirt. Whether it has been done before on an XS650 engine, I do not know. I do have good experience of the product. In my...

camshaft bearing wear on valve cover

Yes the picture shows it clearly. Whether a fix like Loctite Bearing Fit is viable or not depends on the diameter of the bearing location. That's unknown until you measure it.
