I'm baffled. Please Help with backfiring!!

Try the compression check like FB71 said. Have you over-revved it at any point in the recent history? Could have slightly bent a valve. That happened to a buddy of mine's bike. We ended up finding a ever so slightly bent intake valve. A quick check could be to see if it is spittin' back...

    Fuel pump reliability

Hi guys, so normally a fuel pump wouldn't apply to a stock xs650, but the bike is turbo'd and needs a pressurized fuel system to support the pressurized intake air. I installed a solenoid style fuel pump that is external to the fuel tank. It has lasted about 400 miles worth of running and has...

Not sure about offset boring.... Xsjohn wrote a thread about adjusting the timing on tci sign xs's. He slotted the top hole in the pickup coil bracket and left the bottom one alone. He found that it was good for 5 deg of timing shift.

Found out this morning that there has been a noticeable vacuum leak on the right cylinder. Hopefully this gives the cylinder the correct mixture and decreases the amount of detonation.

72 XS650 Sport Bike / Cafe - Project "Land Shark"

Try pouring automatic trans fluid inside the fork and fill it high enough that it exposes enough of inside of the fork to the fluid. Also, gently pry back the dust seal and pour some more atf underneath the dust seal. Let it soak for s couple days and try budging it again. If you force it too...

Question: cowboy, what is your static ignition timing and overall timing at full advance? I am stuck with the stock Yamaha electronic ignition setup and need to retard the timing. The engine pings when boost exceeds 5psi and rolling onto wot. It didn't do that before (if i remember correctly)...

What does a stock xs650 do in the quarter?

The bike grew a turbo over the winter and took it back to the track. The clutch wasn't strong enough to hold but squeezed a 13.0 @ 107 mph out of it. I machined the basket to fit 2 more friction discs and have yet to take it back to the track.

What does a stock xs650 do in the quarter?

As for making "torque cones" from the stock pipes, you cut somewhere at or before the stock headpipe's first major bend. Once you do that, you will see the two layers of the stock exhaust pipe. Locate at the head pipe flange, the weld that bonds the outer and inner exhaust pipes and carefully...

    wandering idle problem

Just a heads up, when performing the dead cylinder method, you actually remove the spark plug cap from the cylinder that you want killed. With the TCI ignition though, it has a dual lead coil and wasted spark ignition. Therefore, you MUST place a sparkplug in the empty spark plug boot you just...

    Going without base gasket

I ran my engine without a base gasket and removed the large o rings at the base of the cylinders for quite a while. Just like mriggs said, thin layer of sealant between the cylinders and cases. Didn't have a problem with weapage.

Using the mikes xs replacement rods. What rods have you had the best luck with? I tore the engine down and found the alternator side flywheel walked about a sixteenth of an inch. It was a good time to replace the stock crank!

That is a good question. The compressor map would give good information on what flow rate and at what psi . The diesel turbo may have a different aspect ratio that will affect spool up too.

    Banshee lock-up clutch

Cowboy, thank you for posting this! Is the stackup clutch spring bolt, aluminum sleeve (as dimensioned in picture 4), lockup head, washers, clutch springs, then pressure plate? Also, I saw in your webpage that you did a lexan/plexiglass right side engine case cover, very nice. But were your...
