Advance Timing Unit and Rod (just to be sure)

At the resting position I remember there being a tiny little bit of play; I believe that's normal. Want to make sure that the weights spring back to resting position after you pull on them (thereby loading the springs.)

Oil Everywhere: cam chain bolt, starter motor, advance housing

Went in and tightened up the screws behind the advance housing. That cleaned up most of the mess on that end. Turns out I hadn't tightened up my starter motor as best as I should have. That took care of the oil drainage from down below. Bolts must have came loose when I was riding. This is the...

Deleting Starter, any weird gears or chains?

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I'm curious about the freeze plug and the directions on Hughs HandBuilt. Directions mention using a socket and extension to drive in the freeze plug: I'm confused as to what means. I would suspect you could just shove the freeze plug in the hole with a...

Oil Everywhere: cam chain bolt, starter motor, advance housing

Oh, and yes-- my starter is useless. Bike is currently a kick only.

Oil Everywhere: cam chain bolt, starter motor, advance housing

So I finally got my bike on the streets (after about 2 years of on and off work). Running like a champ, I must say. Was really enjoying the riding. I knew before I took off that I had a stripped front cam-chain guide bolt. There has been oil leaking from this bolt. Went for a bit of a...

Fuel Screw Tuning or Carb Sync: Which first?

Okay--- the syncing went well. I pulled out the mixture screw just a bit, but I had a hard time hearing any differences. She runs like a champ, nevertheless. I think maybe I'll try the dead cylinder method next time. Unfortunately, other issues came up with the bike: leaking oil out of the...

Fuel Screw Tuning or Carb Sync: Which first?

Friends: I finally have my bike running (rebuilt top end and installed Pamco ignition). Noticed she doesn't start as easily as what I've heard from other people with Pamco--- takes a few kicks the first time. Granted, this is better than it not starting at all, but I want to get her...

    1979 XS650SE: Ignition coil replacement?

This site is a treasure-trove. I owe my bike to it. Plus, I figure the next guy can know what worked and what didn't.

    1979 XS650SE: Ignition coil replacement?

Follow-up: Bought the Pamco and Ultimate Coil kit from MikesXS. Installed the Pamco, did some normal tune-up work, and she hit the streets like a champ. Everything seems to be going well! Thanks for the help--- it has been 2 years coming, but it's nice to finally have the bike up and...

    1979 XS650SE: Ignition coil replacement?

Also I'm only now realizing how many canadians are on this board. The nickel loonie bit had me chuckling for quite a while.

    1979 XS650SE: Ignition coil replacement?

This is all fantastic advice. The ignition system overhaul is a good call-- the parts on the bike look original. I intended to go through the coils when they went bad, anyway. I think now is a good time to just go through and get it taken care of so I don't have to worry about them later...

    1979 XS650SE: Ignition coil replacement?

Friends: I have a 1978 Special that I have been working on (on/off) for the past two years. I've rebuilt the top end and have taken the bike apart and put her all back together. She finally seems close to actually hitting the road, but I'm just running into a few minor road blocks...

    Many thanks.

Friends, Felt it was necessary to dish out a well-deserved thank you to the members of this board for their help in getting my bike together and for contributing to a very helpful site. Was in a tight bind this past summer as I was moving and wasn't taking my bike with me. Needed to...

Rear brake calipers engaged; cannot install rear wheel

Also kind of in an urgent situation as I'm moving at the end of the day. I'm not keen on moving the bike without the rear wheel on there-- hoping someone can help soon.

Rear brake calipers engaged; cannot install rear wheel

When I had my rear wheel off during disassembly, I must have hit the rear brake, because the pads are now touching each other and they will not release. Kind of a bummer because I was hoping to have the bike rolling tonight. Finished rebuilding the motor and installed it in the frame-- just...

    Wristpin Removal? How much force?

Thanks for the tips and advice, everyone. Like I said before, I'd be dead in the water without this place. Checked it with the other intake valve, and there doesn't seem to be much of any play at all. I think I will be okay on the guides. I'm going to go ahead and order new valves. Found...

    Swingarm question

Hmmm... just out of curiosity, where did the "wrong" bushings come from?!

    Wristpin Removal? How much force?

Hopefully someone else that might have a similar problem will find this thread and not freak out. But, I do have other concerns. This motor keeps coming up with new surprises--- the bad kind. I guess that's what I get for buying a bike with 34K miles (I was an idiot and didn't know what I was...

    Wristpin Removal? How much force?

Did some light tapping with a long rod attached to a 7/16th socket and I managed to tap it out. Strangely, though, the wrist pins have two bands of rust colored discoloration. Right around where the connecting rods attach. Should I be worried about this? I'll post up some pics when I'm at a...

    Wristpin Removal? How much force?

Thanks, JP. I also read one other place about tapping them out. If I don't hear anything else, I might just have to go that route.
