    oil leak

Its possible. I'll have to look closely again. The gasket is new and has been retorqued a couple of times. I haven't seen any oil around the tensioner or the base if the heads. Time to get out a magnifying glass.

    oil leak

Wondering if anyone else has had oil leak when the engine is hot from what appears to be the bolt just in front of the dip stick? Thought maybe it was coming from the dip stick, so I put a new rubber seal on it because the old one looked worn out, but that didn't fix it, and the oil seems to be...

    White smoke after rebuild

I did not need to boar the cylinder so I used standard size rings for my rebuild.

    rougher idle after rebuild

Looking like it was a fuel issue after all. My float heights were a little off on the right side (the side with the black plug). After getting home today, the plugs were both similar looking with neither one being overly dark. Idled much better at stop, and took off smoothly. Good thing too. I...

    rougher idle after rebuild

I have been running one size up on the pilot jets, 142.5 mains, pod filters, and the mix screws have been around 3 turns out for a few years now. The carbs were a little out of sync before I resynced them a couple of days ago. Both sides seem to be running the same when I put my hand behind the...

    rougher idle after rebuild

So it looks like the battery didn't fix the problem after all. After a couple of more trips to and from work it is doing the same thing again. The symtoms are this; It starts and runs fine, I have noticeably more power than before the rebuild, runs great, I have about a 7 mile stretch on the way...

    rougher idle after rebuild

Did the engine retorque and all that. No air leaks at the front of carbs. Put a fresh battery in and that seems to have fixed the problem. As far as tweaking carbs, should I set both mix screws the same and start from there? Before the rebuild I had to have one mix screw1/4 turn out more than...

    rougher idle after rebuild

Just rebuilt the top end on my 81. It ran great and was completely reliable the 4 years I rode it before the rebuild. (one kick every time)Only rebuilt because the front cam chain guide was falling apart. I had the carbs tuned quite nicely, so I just left them the way they were when I put...

    White smoke after rebuild

Just a follow up. I went ahead and purchased the correct rings, and honed the cylinders. It's a good thing I had to take it apart again because I did not notice the first time that the cam bearings on the left side had a lot of play in them. Replaced them too and all is well in my xs world...

    Cam bearings

I wish I new about this sight before I recently spent so much money at Mikes. A lot of the things I needed are less expensive, but some things I noticed are quite a bit more expensive too. Pays to shop around.

    Cam bearings

So I need to replace the 2 cam bearings on the left side of the engine. There is definite "play" in them. I believe this is why I have had frequent leaks from there, even after I replace the seal on that side, and more top end noise than normal. There is no movement at all on the right side and...

Can not seem to bleed front brakes 1975 xs650

I realize this is an old thread, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. There are times when you can do everything right, or by the book and still not get any pressure on your brake lever. Especially when everything is new or rebuilt, and full of air. When bleeding by the book doesn't work...

    rings

    White smoke after rebuild

So after taking my engine apart again to get the cylinders deglazed, I started looking at the rings again. They are DNJ PR211 (honda civic) and I wasn't 100% sure of which way the groove was supposed to go on the 2nd ring, and the inside bevel on the first ring, because there are no markings on...

Replacement Ring Pictures: Tell Me What You Think

I know this is an old post, but I purchased the DNJ PR211 rings and was wondering if anyone can tell me which side goes up and which side goes down with these rings. The 1st ring has a bevel on the inside diameter, and the 2nd has a "step" on the outside diameter. Also did anyone have trouble...

    rings

Ok, so I purchased some Honda Civic rings for my 81 rebuild as suggested by some on this forum, mainly because I could get 4 sets for less than the price of 2 sets at Mikes. I know that the letters R, and RN are supposed to face up on the stock rings, and that would put the bevel facing up on...

    White smoke after rebuild

So would it be safe to assume it is the cylinder walls and not the valve seals? I'm just learning about deglazing and crosshatch patterns. Wish I new this a couple of days ago.
