    Busted fork cap, 1977

Hey 5twins, I forgot to mention that I swapped forks about 1 month ago. So yeah, those forks aren't actually the 1977 year. Other than this stupid fork cap these forks are great. Polished, no leaks, etc. So I'm not willing to purchase a whole new set of forks and worry about leaks...

    Busted fork cap, 1977

Interesting point but I've looked for the correct style cap on Ebay but none are available. This is currently preventing me from riding because the forks currently don't have oil. Best, Adam

    Busted fork cap, 1977

Hey guys, I busted the cap to the fork tube on the right fork on my 1977. It is the type with the pre-load adjustment. I'm going to use a combination of heat, a chisel, and a bfh to get it loose tomorrow but once it is removed its definitely going to be all buggered up and not re-useable...

    Running hot?

Thanks for all this info guys. I'm really leaning towards timing at the moment. Everything is stock on the bike including the jetting. Perhaps there could be an air leak which is causing a lean condition but I think it would be more obvious on the plugs. I'll check timing tonight and see...

    Running hot?

Thanks rg. Took about 4 months. Bike had sat outside, partially covered for 20 years. Rebuilt carbs, new wiring harness, new rectifier, regulator, and rotor, and a new set of points. After all that she fired right up. Kathos, Both sides run equally hot.

    Running hot?

Hey guys, Thanks for all the input. I am running a completely stock bike. Exhaust, air filters, everything. I'm going to go through the bike and check for leaks and also check the bike's timing. FYI, I put a new set of points in the bike about 500 miles ago and timed the bike then...

    Running hot?

Ok, so I looked at the plugs and if anything I am running too rich!?!?! Here is a picture: The left plug looks to be running a bit rich while the right plug looks to be spot on. I'm wondering why the bike would be running hot if the mixture is set properly. Can this be related to...

    Running hot?

Hey everyone, Took the bike on the highway for the first time. It was ~10 miles. When I got home I checked engine temps out of curiosity and I think I'm running way too hot. Jugs:280 Near spark plug: 305 Header pipe: 365. It is 70 degrees outside today and I was traveling at about...

    clutch cable suddenly loose

Hey guys, Thanks for the replies. the cable is brand new so I don't expect broken strands. Regardless, I'll check as well as I can. Also, I already pulled the alternator cover. Everything appears to be in working order. I'm just going to re-adjust everything and go from there...

    clutch cable suddenly loose

Hey everyone, My clutch cable is new and has less than 200 miles on it. Went to my bike this morning and the clutch cable was all of a sudden very loose. It was so lose that squeezing the lever wouldn't even disengage the clutch. If I screw the lever adjustment screw out almost all the...

Can someone confirm this tire size?

Hey guys, Found a shop that will mount tires that I bring into them. I am going with the Shinko 712 Model of tire for my stock 1977 XS650. For the front: 100/90H-19 For the rear: 110/90H-18 Should these sizes give a stock look and feel? I've verified on the forum that these...

cam chain tensioner acorn nut messing up

Thanks guys. I actually have a 'type A' tensioner assembly as well. Can I install that on my 1977? It has a lock-nut so that would be preferable to me. If I want to swap must I exchange the hole housing (the 6 bolt thing) or can I just swap the internals? Also, I cant tell from the pick...
