    Headbolt Over Torqued

Guys- Was doing a retorque on my head tonight and screwed up. Was using a new torque wrench and was missing the "click" (was very subtle on this wrench) as such I overtorqued one of the inner 10mm head bolts. Not sure how far, but I luckily didn't hear anything crack, pop, etc. I backed it...

    73 Forks on a 74?

Good question. Yes, I did check them. Per my calipers they measure 33.90mm.

    73 Forks on a 74?

Fellas- I've got the all too common pitted inner fork tubes on my '74. Given that these are the 34mm coming across replacements without buying new is a bit difficult. Does anyone know if inner fork tubes from a '73 will swap to a '74? MikesXS has got them listed under different part #s but I...

Rookie Mistake - Chem Soaked Butterfly Valves

Thanks TC. Not sure if I'm going to attempt the sync myself or get some help on that idle or flat spot should be easy enough to check for...

Rookie Mistake - Chem Soaked Butterfly Valves

So I screwed up. Am working working on a '79 XS11 with similar carbs to my '74 XS650. This weekend I pulled the carbs, disassembled and chem dipped them. I checked the parts book to make sure I'd gotten anything rubber or plastic out, but my book didn't show that there are rubber seals...

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Jae- Got a couple pics today of my tank mounts. The first shows where I welded on a flat bar just under my coils. I used modified rubber stoppers with some holes drilled through for mounts to quell the vibes. Second pic shows the bracket at the back. You can also see how I closed the...

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Just get standard triumph petcocks. Any will work so long as you have the right thread. I'd probably wait on the petcocks until you get things on the bike and situated the way you want. That way, if you have to move the bungs on the tank you can get whatever bungs & petcocks fit/work best...

    Let's See The XS's

Here's the latest on my '74 Cafe. Still need to paint the frame. Before and after...

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

That's a tough one. The gold version has more open area in the tunnel which would help with space/clearance if you run into issues. I wonder if overall size and tunnel angle are the same? I'm not a triumph guy so it would be hard to say

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Other thing you could do before your order is ask for some measurements of the tunnel, you've got a lot of rise/space on your frame between the motor at the handle bars, not sure if that will make the tank sit at too much of an angle or not...

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Jae- Yeah, it will *probably* work. Just be ready to do some mods to your frame at least. I also closed off the back of the tunnel on mine so things would work right. Not a big deal for a good welder/body man. If you like how mine sits, you should be in good shape. Where are you...

    '74 Cafe Update

Thanks guys! Good idea on lowering the tach/speedo and headlight. I'll have to look into that. Highside- my signature needs work because of my bad spelling/typing :)

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Jae- The tank you have looks great and I think will be very nice on your bike, with a bit of elbow grease. Remember that everything has to be rubber mounted so that the vibs from the motor don't crack the welds on the tank. Look at this website for further inspiration, these guys blow me...

want to put and old school Triumph tank on my 79 XS650

Jae79- I just did exactly what you are looking to do. I have a '74 Triumph Trident tank. Here's a couple things to watch out for: -Most triumph tanks that I have seen have a straight tunnel. This will work with the frame on an XS650, but does get tight around the top motor mounts. A...

Tip on how to find oil leaks

So I just got my '74 cafe on the road this summer and have been fighting a bunch of oil leaks here and there. Was having a heck of time tracing them and was worried that I had a head gasket leak. So, my buddy who is an aircraft mechanic comes over and shares with me this: oil glows under...

    '74 Cafe Update

Guys, New pics. I got a quick coat of paint on and have put 80 miles on so far. Working up slowing during this shakedown phase. Very happy so far. Pamco ignition and 6th over pistons make for a great combo in terms of performance.

    '74 Cafe Update

Ton Up - talked to my fiberglass guy and found out he literally broke the mold when we made my seat. I could see a scenario where I loan you my butt stop and you make a splash mold off it if you or someone you know can do fiberglass work.

    '74 Cafe Update

Cafe-Dave- So you want to know cost for machine time? I can see what it would take. The router is a 5-axis and can make big parts, so they wouldn't have any trouble cutting XS stuff. Ton Up- I'll have to do some checking... Thanks guys!

    '74 Cafe Update

Thanks guys! It's getting there. Azman, yeah, height on the tank was bit tricky. The triumph tank is a bit taller than stock. I probably stared at the bike for 3 hours justing trying to visualize how it could set and not bump into stuff. Paint will probably be flat black. Some...

    '74 Cafe Update

All- Just put in some time in the garage and things are finally coming together. Here's an update on my cafe build. (btw I started with a $50 basket case from a junk yard. If you want to know how to get a non-salvage, non-bonded title in IA I can help with that) - motor overhaul, 6th...
