Thanks for the reply guys. I did a compression test and the left cylinder has 130 and the right has 0. I think there is a hold in the piston from whatever reason. I'll have to replace the piston and clean out the bottom end. Hopefully I won't need a rebore but if there is a lot of damage...

You mean that the air leak would cause a lean mixture causing the bike to run very hot and putting a hole in the piston?

I might have ordered the wrong spark plug boots from xs650direct. I think the ones I have on the bike are resistor type but I can't find any markings on it. My 77 xs650 is stock with points and stock coils. I ordered the non resistor type boots from xs650direct and bp7es plugs. I couldn't...

Well it looks like the problem had solved itself. The next day I took a 50 mile ride on the highway/street and the bike has been running great. Even the battery is holding a charge so I have nothing to complain about. Thanks for all the responses.

gggGary I charged the battery overnight with my trusty battery tender. Showing a volatage of 12.9 at the battery. When I start the bike it drops a bit to 12.4 and when I rev it at 3000 rpm it shows 13.1 so the charging system is weak as you mentioned. I took the bike for a 20 minute ride and...
