Random reasons you stopp working on your bike for a while

Looks like we've got quite the range of things here guys. Hahah yea between frying the harness of the XS with my own stupidity, this cap breaking, and lack of a decent job most days, the XS has been sitting on shelves and in my room just hangin' around. Along with my red car that's been...

Random reasons you stopp working on your bike for a while

Yea I don't even really remember what happened to it. It was about 6 months ago and hell if I know where to find a good one of those things. I'm gonna have to figure somethin' out. Anyone got any interesting stories on just stopping work cold on your bike?

Trouble shooting? first check OPERATOR ERROR!

Hah, well first off, my XS is my first bike, first carb'd anything, and first older vehicle with electrical components I don't understand too well yet. Anyways, I tried starting the bike numerous times from a battery charger (which I guess would be the first mistake), fried a fuse, got...

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

Sorry to get back to this so late, but a few days ago, I was FINALLY able to find the torch head at Wal-Mart. I'm surprised the bushings took so long to come out, and at that, they really didn't even burn. They just kind of hardened and cracked and broke. So much for plastic. Hahah but yea...

Thank you everyone for the ideas. My propane torch was stolen (long story, good memory. lol), but will be replaced and tried out tomorrow.

Xj, the volt meter was a great idea. I just used the multimeter and tested for continuity, and got none at all. Gordon, I do indeed have the new bushings. Now just to see whether or not I have my half drive extension on me. I hate letting people borrow my tools.

I take it the lipped end of the bushing that's exposed on the end of the swingarm was already broken off or something like that?

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

Man you don't even know how often I lose track of things. My phone was dead and in my bookbag for two days, it usually takes me about ten minutes to find my screwdriver anytime I set it down, blah blah. Lol but yea, apparently my mom has the camera with her at the moment. Anyways, I've tapped...

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

I'm thinking now that it has been modified. The only reason I think against that, is the PO didn't ride the bike very much. It still even has the tires from '75. I'm still looking for my camera too. Hahah

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

Gary, just to start from page 1, #2 in the diagram is what we all replace, right? and without #7 and #4 in the way, #2 becomes the end of the swing arm pivot, correct? Because the #2 on my swing arm, definitely does not feel like any sort of plastic...

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

Well, now I'm not so sure... I can see a seperation at either end of the swingarm, but both sides, in and out just feel like complete metal. Not sure where the camera is at the moment, but I'll try and post a pic tomorrow.

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

Jetero, I've been in that same boat too. A little worse, even. Trying to start my car with the wire from the coil to dizzy off, or a breaker bar on my crank pulley nut and popping the pulley loose, and replacing my ECU with an SOHC instad of the DOHC. Now my motor is getting rebuilt. :banghead...

So I'm feelin' pretty stupid or stumped on my swingarm bushings.

I never looked too closely at my swingarm, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm missing. I'm going to assume the new bronze bushings go into either side of the swingarm. Well, it looks as if I already have some sort of replacement metal bushings? And, what is in the swingarm right...

    Pamco warranty?

Don't worry, Pete is always on the forums, and I'm sure he'll see this post. From what I've seen posted by him, he is VERY helpful and obviously knowledgeable on his own product. He'll be glad to help you figure everything out with your ignition.

How to get out stripped BS38 Pilot Jets?

I had the same exact problem, and it sucks. I took a Torx screwdriver that was randomly laying around, which was just a little bit bigger than the hole of the jet, and I tapped/lightly hammered it into the jet and easily turned it out. I'm not sure how harmful it could have been to the threads...

    Bushings vs needle bearings

I have no experience with either, but I faintly remember reading something about the needle bearings being able to rust out without proper care, so I'm personally sticking with the bronze bushings.

The brown wire from my reg/rec is ruining my life.

The only thing I could think of is check your harness for any shorts, like a melted connector, cut insulation, or other things like that. Look for anything grounding out that should not be, and vice versa. Good luck.

for those who aren't running a speedometer

Just as I was going to help a member for the first time on this forum, the man himself appeared. I was just looking at Hugh's website maybe five minutes ago, then came to see this thread, and that he has already helped you. Hahah, good luck!
