    New to the riding world!

Hi, Matt, and welcome to the world of XS650. I left it about 35 years ago and am happy to be back. I'd say that if that bike has been run "a couple times a year around the block" it is likely to need very little. Don't assume you'll need to rebuild the carbs. There are some good threads on...

    oil filters - HELP!

Does it sound like a good plan? I think so, but so is not going too far from home and keeping your trailer tires aired up. Just kidding, kind of. I have no idea, but shavings and chunks in the lower end of any engine would make me tear it down to find the cause. This opinion is worth...

    Soldering Connections

It's been a long time, but if I recall correctly you hold the soldering iron tip on the connector until it is quite hot, then apply the solder to the wires where they go into the connector and it will melt into/onto the connector. It sucks up into the wire strands. But it's been a long time...

    Help!!!! Advance unit broken.

Either Savage City Cycles or Geneva Cycle and ATV was recently parting out an entire XS650. Sorry, don't have ANY more information than that...perhaps a Bing search will turn up their address/details. Good luck.

    Ignition switch opinions

Maybe an old BSA or Triumph switch? If memory serves, they were pretty simple, one-position, on-off switches, pretty compact and in fact mounted where you indicate. But my memory is maybe not so good...and yessir that would be LUCAS Electrics, proceed at your own risk.

i have made a dumb mistake. what do i do.

Others much more knowledgeable than I will chime in, but I'm gonna give you some bad news. You are going to have to put it in the right way. Cam lobes have specific "ramps" opening and closing valves, much less all the other issues you would run into...such as whether the thing would be timed...
