    News about Royboy

Hello, everyone. I know my dad was very active on this site and he enjoyed it SO much. I wanted to pass along that Roy passed away quite suddenly last Tuesday. He loved his bikes and loved the comaradarie he found on this forum. Thank you for your kindness to him over the years. Happy trails to...

    STP as Chain Lube?

I'm tempted to try it. It's some of the slipperyest stuff on the planet. I wouldn't put it in a wet clutch motor but I'm thinking of trying it on the drive chains. Any experience out there? I'm tired of cleaning the gummy spray can crap they sell in bike shops off my wheels, inner fender...

    New Ride

Picked this up yesterday. 2000 Mustang GT, 4.6 liter V8, 5 speed, $6,500, 14,000 miles, 18 years old. Belonged to a nice lady I know. Makes a nice counterpoint to my 94' which lives in Arizona now. This thing looks showroom new. Needs a few power adders and some serious wheels and tires...

    Prentiss No. 54 Vice

One of the guys on my staff, Justin, is a very strong guy. Yesterday he was cinching something down pretty tightly on my vintage Craftsman bench vise and he actually twisted off the threaded shaft that is the heart of any vise. It had served me well for a long time but I always knew that it...

    Back to Minnesota

Over the last three days we moved back to Minnesota for the summer. So happy to be back with my old Yamaha bikes, the shop, and the lake! AZ is great but this is where the fun is when it comes to twisty black top roads and old bikes! Can't wait to get riding. roy

    Motorcycle Classics Nov/Dec Cover Story

Maybe it's been mentioned and I failed to notice but I've not seen anything here about the cover story on the current issue of "Motorcycle Classics". So often their coverage is focused on Brit and Italian bikes it was nice to see them give our favorite ride a little attention. roy

    Mikes XS regulator/rectifier=total frustration

In an effort to somewhat modernize the 77'D and make it as reliable as possible I continue to update and upgrade the various systems. Most recently I decided to change out the old regulator and rectifier to a solid state combined unit. I ordered up Mike's part #24-2089 and in a few days it...

    Accident post mortem

Last October my 78'SE was heavily rear ended by another bike. My buddy following me on a 3rd Generation Honda Magna failed to notice me slowing for a turn and hit me squarely in the rear tire with his front tire. Naturally this put us both down hard. The XS went down on its right side and...

Is the steering stem/bottom clamp square?

A little advice please. Here's something I have been pondering for a couple weeks now. After the 77'D took it's spill this spring, and during the subsequent rebuild, I've been fretting over the front end alignment. The bike doesn't handle as well as it did prior to the accident. New parts...

    Well Hell Reresto'd

You may recall that early last June a buddy of mine dropped the 77' D resto in a too tight curve. The last couple of months have been spent bringing her back to life. As you can see, we've strayed a bit further from the stock appearance and managed to do a few things that I'd been wanting to...

    Steering Stop How important?

So I'm beginning to strip down the 77'D that got crashed yesterday. Numerous scrapes and scuffs of course. Gonna need a new fuel tank, etc., etc. One thing however has me a bit stumped. The steering stop welded to the headstock snapped off at the weld when the bars went hard over. It's not...

    Well Hell

Loaned the 77'D to a friend today so he could go along on a ride through the twisties. Over cooked a corner I guess, not sure since I was ahead of him. He lost some skin but thankfully not badly hurt. Guess it's time for a rebuild. roy

    Source of driveline snatch

The problem is with my 77'D with 6700 miles on the clock. I've searched the forum and read about the damper springs on the back of the clutch and their willingness to break and cause driveline snatch. Mine however seem to be fine. When I'm idling around in first gear the snatch is quite...

    right side filter cover removal

Small new problem here. Changing the oil in the 77D' this morning and am having difficulty removing the filter cover. Bolts are out obviously but cover is stuck. I don't want to pry on it as that leads to scaring. Tried bumping it with a soft hammer to no avail. Suggestions? roy

    Last AZ ride this season

Well, our first winter in Arizona has been just swell! Never snowed once. Beginning to think about heading north soon so took what will probably be the last ride down here this morning. The desert flowers are really rockin' right now and it's just beautiful. Rode 105 miles of two lane...
