For Sale - 1981 XS650 cafe racer, $2600 (Birmingham, AL)

I was planning on maybe putting the bike on ebay once it starts to warm up, but I figure I may as well put it on here first and see what happens. Here is a link to a full album: http://picasaweb.google.com/CooperBennett/XS650CafeRacer?feat=directlink This is a cafe racer converted from a...

    Installing nylon screws in stator

Thanks Pete! I put in the nylon screws, switched my brush over to the older bracket, and used the black wire which I put in the slot of the connector so that it matches up with the positive brown wire. Success!

    Installing nylon screws in stator

I'm afraid I'm about to reveal just how ignorant I am with electrics. I have an older model ('72 I think) stator which I want to use to replace the original '81 model stator. I also have the correct sized nylon screws. There are 4 screws on the brush holder; I gather that the top 2 and the...

Stripped threads in front cam chain guide.....fixable?

nj, that would be great, thanks! I confess that I put this guide in and I stripped the receiver threads. I never have seen a torque spec for it. That being said, the guide is virtually brand new so if I can repair it then I'd like to give it a shot. I was thinking that the upper bolt will...

Stripped threads in front cam chain guide.....fixable?

I noticed that I've got a pretty good oil leak from the lower bolt on the front cam chain guide. The leak seems to be coming out of the smaller bolt that fits into the other bolt. All the copper washers are in place. The threads on the guide inside feel stripped....it is definitely on the...

    Stator compatibility?

Ha, yea, I'd just as soon use the later ones as well. But at the moment at least they cost about twice as much on ebay. So, I'll get an old one.

    Stator compatibility?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have 2 meters and both have acted similarly. Maybe its a bad contact, I could cut the wire and try again. But, as I said, when it does steady out the reading is way low, as in .1-.2 ohms between 2 white wires after subtracting the resistance of the leads...

    Stator compatibility?

Thanks for the reply Pete. Well, following Curly's guide I only get 4-5 AC volts on each white wire in step 6. When I measure the resistance b/w 2 white wires in step 7 the meter jumps around and doesn't want to give me a steady reading. If I hold the leads on for 5-10 seconds it will...

    Stator compatibility?

Well after going through the Curly's charging guide I've decided that my stator is shot. I I have an '81 with Pamco; the rotor and reg/rect are stock. Can anyone tell me if I can use one of the earlier model stators? I'm not sure what the difference would be? Maybe something with the...

Making progress, but still wont idle!! (Video works now)

I think its fixed! A couple days before it stopped running in an attempt to quiet it down I had put a drag baffle inside the baffle that comes in the short reverse cone mufflers I'm using. I was able to get it started today with all the baffling pulled out, but barely a pop with them put in...

Whoops, it should be fixed now. Thanks for the heads up.

Making progress, but still wont idle!! (Video works now)

So I have been trying for days to get this thing ('81 w/ stock carbs) to run. It was running until a few days ago when it died and hasn't wanted to start since. I've pulled the carbs 3 times, so I'm pretty sure they're clean; mix screws are 2.5 turns out. Compression is good. I have...

What voltage required at coil for ignition??

Thanks Pete. In the interest of trying to eliminate all the possibilities one by one.....I'm not convinced that the spark I'm getting looks like it should. I don't know, its pretty hard to tell from videos on the computer compared to looking at it in real life. But, I would describe the spart...

What voltage required at coil for ignition??

hotrod? Anyways, as the first post says, all the wiring and connectors are brand new and they are all soldered. I'm not sure what to think. xjwmx, the drop is present when the coil is connected, but it is still at 12.08v coming out of the fuse so i don't think it is the ignition box...

What voltage required at coil for ignition??

Yes, that makes sense. I tested the "female" side of the connection while the wires were connected (by testing the back side of the connector) and it also gets the 11.62v. When I disconnect the wires, the "female" side goes up to 12.08v. I'm not sure if that is normal or not. I'll resolder...

What voltage required at coil for ignition??

I noticed something today while I was fooling with my bike trying to get it to start...it may be completely normal but I'm not sure. I'm getting 12.08 volts on the ignition circuit as it leaves the fuse box. At the coil, I'm only getting 11.62 volts. I cleaned the connection (all wiring is...

Is this just a charging issue? Or something more?

Pete, Thanks for the reply. I had really high hopes about this from your link: "Note: There is also a pin in the advance mechanism plate used to secure the locating pin that sometimes protrudes and interferes with the nut that holds the advance mechanism in place. File this pin down as well."...

Is this just a charging issue? Or something more?

Sorry, maybe I misspoke. I thoroughly cleaned and refurbished the carbs myself, replacing only the float valves, gaskets, rubber plugs, etc. I know them to have been working fine as of two days ago. Then I have pulled them and "cleaned" the seemingly clean carbs twice more since then.
