Long Rod Conversion? I think so!

I'm not Hugh, but I do believe you're right on with it increases torque. If it's like stroking a V8, typically what happens is that you'll gain torque (and plenty of it), but you'll lose your top end reving that these engines have. Though since these can rev higher than a stock American V8...

ever use RainX on your shield

I haven't used Rain-X on my shield (though did use the anti-fog on my racing helmet, seemed to work well I thought) but I use it on my trucks windshield. When applied it leaves a bit of a film. That can be removed by a spraying of water (since it's basically a wax). Also make sure the surface...

phosphoric acid rust removal field test

Sounds like I'm going with what you're doing, the 50/50 solution. I'll be redoing my paint anyway, so should I end up getting the same reaction as you, I'll be okay. But sorry to hear about your paint.

    Newbie XS 650

Always nice to get a free bike, though yours runs...where mine...well...at the moment I'm currently stuck making engine noises. One of these days.

    Thinking of a rephase

Thanks! I've been noticing that name coming up in a good number of searches. When I get this thing apart and ready to go I'll give him a ring.

    Thinking of a rephase

Who does it best? Or would I be able to go to a local machine shop and they would know what I'm talking about?

Ever been "paced" by a "gawker"?

I enjoyed reading this piece; you write quite well, almost as if you do it for a living. Reminds me of the articles I wrote on my travels in Japan (one being on a motorcycle through the country side. Just beautiful.) back in college. I can't wait to get my paper weight moving sometime, right...

The big picture, my basket case 75'

Is there a link? Because otherwise I was planning on the ol' spot weld on a bolt and use a slide hammer. I plan on a repaint, not sure if you can see but it has some major scratches and missing patches. This thing looked like it was tipped over a few times while in storage. As much as I'd like...

    8 Pack Clutch Mod

Once I get my clutch off my engine I plan on joining the 8 plate club if I can. I may not be making the hp like some here, but there are still plenty of benefits regardless. Plus I know the clutch will still be there with some more spirited driving as well.

The big picture, my basket case 75'

Yeah, my dad mentioned I should keep an eye on my jet settings for now depending on what I'm building. I think I might stick with a 650 but procure (over time anyway) parts for a 700 or 750 build should I want to go faster.

The big picture, my basket case 75'

Here are some current photos of my 75' Procured for free, and titled (which is a big win for me) here it is in all of it's barn dust covered glory. DSC_0001 by Hachi Gatsu, on Flickr Here's the gas tank. I found the keys and took a peak inside. Rusty. Its fixable, but kinda sucked...

    I think these are BS38's...right?

I'm a believer now. I tried a 48 hour soaking of PB Blaster on those slides and they refused to move an inch (or millimeter, which is unusual since I've always had good luck with PB). I read the bottom part of that link about boiling your carburetor in hot water to ease a stuck slide and...

    Lil' vid of my bike

Two questions, One, where did you find the mini-gage set-up? And two, how does one go about fitting an ATV master cylinder set-up and what brand did you use? Other than that, awesome sounding bike, even if the timing needs work, sounds better than mine (just me making "vroom" noises at the...
