    '80 Special wiring question

All stock 1980 Special. The positive battery cable from the battery to the starter solenoid has a smaller red wire with a bullet type connector attached to the solenoid end. What is that small red wire for? will the bike function normally without it? thanks in advance

    Swingarm Bushings

I've taken several swingarms to a local machine shop and had them press the bronze bushings in on a 10 ton press. took them 5 minutes, they charged me $10. well worth it.

    Swingarm Bushings

welcome to you and your new bike. I've done 6 xs650's and they all needed new swingarm bushings. I went with the bronze units from mike's and never had an issue with any of them. just get the old plastic ones out and press in the new bronze ones. I have never replace a pivot bolt or sleeve even...

average xs650 price running and not running?

here in phoenix 1st xs650 cost me $1,100 and rode it home. spent another $1,000 on it and sold it for $2,500. 2nd one a guy gave to me if I would dig it out of his back yard. there was a large shrub growing though it. spent about $1,500 on it and sold it for $2,000. have done several others...

    Spark plugs

fwiw, I've used the iridiums in all of my xs650's for some time with good results. the bikes all have had stock ignition systems, and with the iridiums they started much more quickly and idled better. more power? not so you could notice. better mpg? no. faster speeds? no. run hotter or cooler...

stripped a valve cover stud in head

just got done adjusting the valves (1980 special)and I stripped one of the studs in the exhaust valve cover, right side, the 1 that screws into the head itself. is there an easy fix or am I looking at taking the engine out to fix this properly? the threads of the stud are intact so it's the hole...

    overcharging problem

thanks all od you guys, I've examined as much of the wiring harness as I can see without taking the bike apart and can't see any problem areas. behind the chain no way the wires are rubbing, under the gas tank and seat all appears undamaged. how the heck would you find a short inside a wiring...

    overcharging problem

thanks for getting me going in the right direction. with the reg/rec off the bike I just connected my meter to the green wire in the harness side of the plug and I get continuity(my meter buzzes) when I touch the other meter lead to any metal on the bike. sounds like a short to ground in the...
