1972 Rear Cam Chain Guide Install??

That's Sgilliesjr! Sorry about butchering your username, I should increase my monitor font size. I got the S and the jr right...

1972 Rear Cam Chain Guide Install??

Hey Sgilesjr, Thanks for passing that on. I am working on the time lapse version of reassembling my '72. I started putting it together last fall and got to the point where the cam chain tensioner wouldn't go back in. I pulled it back apart and bought all new gaskets, then the project went...

Unidentified part in shift fork area

Mystery solved - it is an alignment sleeve, only not for the case. I was cleaning up the cylinder jugs and realized one of the alignment sleeves for the rocker cover was missing. My part found it's home. I have no idea how it got where I found it, I must have dropped it without noticing.

Unidentified part in shift fork area

That's exactly what I thought, but I can't find where it might have been. All the rest of the locating 'sleeves' are smaller around and they are all there on the case halves. I compared both sets of cases. I'm wondering if someone repurposed an alignment bushing from something else?

Unidentified part in shift fork area

Hey all, I'm swapping internals from my old engine with the cracked cases into my new cases. I figgured what the hell and had the rephase work done while I was at it. Thanks Hugh! Anyway, when I took the shift fork assembly apart, shazam! A piece appeared beneath the assembly that I...

Got the bottom end split. Anything is should look out for?

I posted on a similar whine last summer. I thought it was the cam bearings. I also had a crack in my crank case, so I searched most of the winter for a deal on another pair of case halves. I finally found 'em and I'm reassembling now. I noticed one of the crank bearings isn't very smooth and...

    Wanted - 1972 XS650 parts engine/case

From what I understand, the upper and lower halves are line bored, so I'm looking for both halves that are stamped to match. Thanks.

    Wanted - 1972 XS650 parts engine/case

I'm looking for a parts motor or a good case from a '72. I've got a good runner with a cracked case and I'd like to swap it out this winter. I've been searching Craigslist and eBay without much luck so I thought I'd pitch it here. Preferably west coast for lower shipping $$ or maybe even pick...

    motor swap/ parts interchangability

Seller provided full refund, including shipping. There are still good people on ebay. Now I just need to find an XS2 case. Anybody got a spare they can part with?

engine whining when revving up? Help

I would definetly check the oil filter and the magnets first - that's way simpler than dropping the engine to pull the cam cap off for the bearing swap. Mine has a cracked case so I'm going all the way. Also, I checked for the plastic chunks first and found none. That doesn't mean my cam...

engine whining when revving up? Help

yamabob - thanks for the PM directing me to this thread. I had the exact same noise with my bike. I am still not sure if it was an overtightend cam chain or bad cam bearings because my project got bigger. I didn't have any plastic pieces from the cam chain guide or tensioner in my oil filter...

    motor swap/ parts interchangability

More likely I'm missing something - like a clear explanation. The ebay seller that sold me the busted case has another case for a 79 XS650 that he describes as a ym17. I don't know what that description means or if it means anything. I had a good runner with a cracked case. After the rest...

    motor swap/ parts interchangability

Maybe I'm reading this right and maybe not. Are you saying that all the cases are the same? Will all the internals from my '72 XS2 fit in a '79 or '84 case? I'm working on returning the '72 case that turned out to be ebay crap. The seller has a '79 ym17 case posted. Maybe I can swap, but...

    Replacing my case

Thanks everybody, I think you all made my case for me (sorry for the bad punn). The ebay seller is reputable and will work with me. He also had several other XS cases posted, so maybe we can work a deal. I'll let y'all know how it goes, I think this guy is a high volume ebayer and this one...

    Replacing my case

Hey guys, I posted earlier about the crack I have on my engine case. I tried using JB weld to temporarily seal it up for the summer, but that didn't work. After taking the top end apart to replace cam bearings, I decided to go ahead and replace the case. I bought a used '72 case off ebay...

    72 with issues

WOW!! That worked great! Thanks XSLeo, I never thought I could do that. I guess I figured the bearings were pressed on the shaft. That beats the heck out of breaking and re-crimping the chain. Why did they use 2 single row ball bearings instead of a double row configuration?

    motor swap/ parts interchangability

Sure enough, JB showed signs of fatigue - and so do I. Due to the incredibly loud top end noise that I'm working through, which has me with the engine half torn down, I've decided to replace the case. By the time I'm done, I should have a solid confidence in this bike's reliability. Please...

    72 with issues

BTW addison, thanks for the pointers. If my cam chain is worn enough to get the cam out, I can continue with the disassembly without having to hassle with breaking and re-crimping it. Seems like a huge time saver to me... Thanks again!

    72 with issues

Thanks for the info. Given the fact that my crank case is cracked, I think I finally convinced myself to make things right. I'm going to continue the tear down and make sure things are OK, since I want my bike be worry free for years. There's a couple crank cases on ebay right now that...

    72 with issues

OK, here's where I'm at. I pulled the cam cover and can't see if the bearings are toast or not. With the rockers off, the engine turns over by hand a little better than before. There is some resistance but it's probably the rings in the cylinders. I put a little oil down the spark plug...
